One of the best ways to support your learners—before, during, and after training—is with effective job aids.

 

Job aids come in many forms: checklists, summaries, reference material, student and teacher guides, worksheets, glossaries, FAQs, and more. The challenge for many designers is knowing when and how to include job aids.

 

Blended learning examples

One of my favorite examples of how job aids can be used with asynchronous courses is the Van Valen’s Gold Rush Journey project.

 

The linear course format will be familiar to most course designers. What makes this course so effective is the remarkable way it includes job aids to guide the student’s historical thinking on Westward Expansion.

 

Challenge of the week

This week your challenge is to show us how to use job aids in e-learning. You can share examples of job aids that were used in place of courses, integrated into courses, or offered as course alternatives.


Tools

You can use Articulate Storyline, Articulate Studio ’09, Articulate Studio ’13, Microsoft Word or PowerPoint to show your e-learning job aids.

Wow, saw this one and already had a sample done from a previous course.  Hypoglycemia 101 is a course I created to help my son's teachers learn how to deal with his low blood sugar.

I recorded this Screenr to show how I incorporated a job aid option.

Okay so here is a little something I had some fun with this afternoon.  I created a learning aid rather than a job aid so it is a bit of a twist on the challenge.

Okay…@ David - thoroughly enjoyed the last challenge of 2013, this community is SO INSPIRATIONAL!!!!!

I wasn't too sure what the "buzz" was around job/learning aids, but after extensive reading and link clicking I think I have a fair idea of what's considered a job/learning aid.

Like Ari, I created another learning aid - specifically around my own language (te reo Māori) and pinpointed a particular process within language acquisition - that being how to passify a active sentence.

This demo starts off with all the rules you need to know (in sequential order) to effectively passify an active sentence in te reo Māori. There are 2 quiz slides (comprised of drag & drops, matching, pick one, reordering and text entry) to reinforce each rule & test your competency/memory/knowledge & application of the rule.

If you ever get lost, there's a hint button and/or the option to return to the home page. Lastly, there's one final test/quiz designed to test all the rules in sequential order.

In the resources tab you will find .png files for individual rule explanations, and a .pdf containing all aforementioned files.

What I've concluded from creating this demo is that process driven cognitive learning can be initially isolated from understanding, as repetition of the process over time will lead to semantic embedment.

I encourage everyone here to give it a go - who knows, you may learn a language?!

@ David - I learned quite a bit about hypoglycemia - especially like all the visual aids and audio to reinforce your topic!

@Ari - how creative indeed, short, sharp, succinct and to the point, I like how you direct your audience to using the included resources to progress further; that's a clever strategy that I will definitely include in my bag of tricks, thanks!

@Ari - Hello! Thanks for the question. I'll try and make some Screenr screencasts. My Public folder is filling up, and I need to keep low the number of uploaded projects.

Hints: I used PPT 2010 and Studio '13. I used the photo characters in Studio '13 and then just did a search for Microsoft Clip Art for the images and graphics (interior of a building, the calendars, the Chief Executive Team, etc.)

I've got a full plate this week, but I will find time to do a screencast for this thread.

Everyone, your kind comments were nice to see! I really did "throw this together" while watching a pro-football game on TV. :-)

David L, yes, DH and I feel your grief. We're southern California natives (living in northern AZ), and we'd "never" cheer for the S.F. 49ers. LOL

Chris, I use Storyline however, for my sample on job aids, I wanted to take some of the new Engage interactions out for a test drive, so I used Studio '13.

And, everyone's warm reception inspired me to write a post on my Wall:

Mine is what I called a "road map" to go with the retro mobile theme of this course. It's really a table of contents for this 16-lesson training program, but the salespeople and their managers print it out and use it all the time so they can easily see which lesson they need to take either for the first time or to refresh their knowledge later on.

My design starting point was an archival image of an old mid-century gas station map, and of course I themed it by adding course colors and fonts, the company logo, and images of the characters.
