Quizmaker '09 Tip: Adding Images to Your Matching Drag-and-Drop Questions Posted Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 8:24 AM

Add to Favorites

Matching drag-and-drop questions in Quizmaker ‘09 are an easy way to make your content more interactive. With this question type, you present a fixed list of items on the left, and draggable choices on the right. Learners drag and drop the choices, to form what they think are the best matching pairs.

But what about if you want to incorporate images in the question instead of just text? You can do that by leveraging the Slide View of Quizmaker’s question editor. Here’s a walk-through of how to do it:

  1. In Quizmaker, click Graded Question and choose Matching Drag and Drop for the question type.
  2. When the Form View of the question editor appears, enter your question text, and then enter your choices and matches. The text you enter in the Choice column won’t be seen by your learners (they’ll see an image instead) — so whatever you put there is really just for your own reference.
  3. Click Slide View.
  4. Choose Insert>Picture and insert the pictures you want to use in place of the items listed in the left-hand column. In my example in the screencast above, I used images of three different musical instruments.
  5. If you like, resize the bounding box of the drag-and-drop items so that the draggable items on the right are a width that looks nice with your text.
  6. Now position each of your images on top of the appropriate items in the left-hand column, so that the images cover up the text.
  7. If there’s too much of the puzzle-piece-shapes showing behind the images, you can use the Insert>Shape tool to draw a shape that covers up the parts that you don’t want to be visible.

Please I need some Help with printing certificate at the end of the training.

When you finish a training and pass the test appear a windows with printing option. At this moment you can print the certificate typing your name, but continue open the same windows with the same print option. For that other student in the same machine can print another version of certificate. How can I set the windows to close after click print option. I know that after click finish the windows close, but I need close when click print.

Please help me.

I love your blog and I enjoy Articulate but I'm a little frustrated with limitations right now. I really need to be able to create a true interaction in the learning. I want to create a learning environment where instruction can take place as well as practice case stud ies where my learner can actually interact and learn through answering questions (without grading) and by clicking system screen shots as if there were hotspots. I'm confused as to whether I can/should use Engage or Quizzmaker for this.

Hi Rachel! Maybe you could share some more details in the Forums regarding the specific kind of interaction you're interested in building? I bet we could come up with some good ideas for you.

Hello yq... are you asking if there's a way to display on-click audio in Quizmaker? There isn't a built-in feature for that in Quizmaker, but that would make a great feature request: www.articulate.com/.../feature  In the meantime, here are a couple options you could try: http://www.screenr.com/STSs , or http://www.screenr.com/F9S. There is also a widget available from elearningenhanced.com: elearningenhanced.com/.../quizmaker-audio-button

Jeanette-  this tutorial helped me "almost" accomplish what I am trying to do.  I am once again working with video files in my quiz.  I wanted to design a quiz in which the student watches multiple questions and responses (in American Sign Language) then matches the language "sets".  Is there some way to make this happen?  If not is there another possible way for me to display flash video within the selection set? Maybe even a regular matching question that displays the media file then the student sees the "set" of media files to select from?

Hi Allie! You could definitely use videos for the questions & answers in a true/false, multiple choice, or multiple response question! Here's an example: http://www.screenr.com/GN78 You could also experiment with doing fun things with hotspot questions, like Dave Moxon describes here: daveperso.mediaenglishonline.com/.../create-a-video-hotspot-question-in-quizmaker-09  For other question types that involve drag/drop or dropdown choices, you could certainly incorporate video in *portions* of the question, but the answer choices themselves (i.e., the draggable items or the items in a dropdown choice) would need to be text-based. In any case, I hope this gives you some ideas to work with. :)

Jeanette,

I could just kiss you for this!  I spent a good part of my day yesterday trying to figure out how to make this work.  Your screencast gave me EXACTLY what I needed!  I can extend this learning in new and creative endeavors even beyond my first concept!  Thank you... Thank you... THANK YOU!  I am so excited to keep moving on this now!

Hey Jeanette!

Now, 8 months later, I'd like to be able to have the learners drag an image on the right to the Choice image on the left...no onscreen text, just images.

I'll submit that as a Feature Request for Engage...and it's probably already on the Enhancements list (I hope!). And, it may be in that "other" tool that is currently in Beta Test phase. ;-)

Hey Jenise! Currently in Quizmaker it's not possible to create a drag/drop exercise where the draggable/droppable items are all images with no text... but you know we love feature requests. :) www.articulate.com/.../feature And yes, Storyline will definitely open up some new possibilities for building more flexible drag and drop interactions.

Hi Jeanette, I love this activity. Is there a way to make it non-graded (no correct answer - any item can match any picture)? I'm guessing the "survey" questions are only meant for this need...

Thanks!

Hey Lauren! You could do this: When you set up your question, you can enter "0" for the point value of both the correct and incorrect score, so that there's no points associated with the question. For the pop-up feedback, you could either disable that altogether by setting the Feedback selector to None, as shown here: cl.ly/1f2G1Q2r2w0d3q1v1h3d  ...or you could just enter the same feedback for both Correct and Incorrect, and change the text label for the feedback popup title to something more generic (like "Feedback" instead of "Correct" and "Incorrect"). Or of course another option would be to show the learner a blank slide for the feedback. So many options! :)

Thanks Jeanette. I had already applied each of those suggestions. After reviewing the quiz, I noticed my confusion is when the "try again" label appears. This made me think it was wanting to "grade" it. I have the quiz set for the user to leave at any time. What am I missing? Thanks!

Ah, it sounds like maybe your question is set up for multiple attempts? Open your question editor and make sure the Attempts selector is set to 1.

That's it! Thank you so much. Our standard is to set all quizzes to unlimited attempts, so my brain was not "allowed" to think in that direction...hehe. Thanks again for your time.

Hi! I had tried to do exactly what you,ve done here and my articulate doesn't allow me to stick the rectangle to cover up the writing because it remains shorter than the writing and when a drag it out of the page it covers just around the writing :) Help!  It  also delimits an area within the annotations where doesnt allow me to place the annotations. What could the problem be? - sorry for mixing anntotions with matching :) Thx!

Hey Claudia! I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time picturing the trouble that you're having. Would it be possible for you to post in the Quizmaker forum & attach a copy of your quiz file so that I can open it in Quizmaker and take a look? community.articulate.com/.../26.aspx

I am trying to import a quiz from Quizmaker 09 into Storyline but it stops with an "out of memory" error.  I tried just importing one slide from that quiz and it said the same thing.  Any suggestions?

I would rather not have to recreate the quiz, but...

Hi Jerry - would you mind submitting a support case with your Quizmaker file attached, so that a support engineer can take a look at what the trouble might be? You can do that here: www.articulate.com/.../method.php Thanks!

ive made it finally and it looks really nice, thank you. but now i'm having a problem with shuffle answers. i do not need this option to be active and keep mixing the answers because the learner doesn't see the corect answer behind the picture and he/she can't match it right. can you help? thx!

Hey Claudia, the matching drag-and-drop question type actually doesn't offer a way to shuffle answers, so perhaps you are using a different question type? If so, when you open up the question editor in Form View, you should see an option on the toolbar that says "Shuffle," and you can change that to "None." cl.ly/.../3U1b3p2o1A3C

HI Jeanette, great article - I have used a matching quiz in the presentation I have just published to our LMS for testing and have encountered a problem. One user attempted the quiz and has somehow been locked down - she can't move any of the components around now to answer the question again and complete the training module. We are testing with many users, this is the only person who has, so far encountered this problem. Is there any way to fix it on one users computer only? I have everything set up that they must answer the quiz correctly to continue, so she is stuck!

Thanks for your help!

Jane, have you tried to clear out the computer's CACHE?

Hey Jane, not sure what the issue would be, especially if just one user is encountering the problem. She could perhaps just refresh her browser with F5 or use Ctrl+F5 to refresh & clear the cache as Jerry suggested, and see if that reloads the course for her.
