Leveraging Animation Speeds in Storyline
Jun 18, 2012
Got to playing with grouped / nested animations this weekend while trying to work out more subtle transitions. The figures and example below may be helpful for others looking at the same thing. These are my estimates for the total animation transit time:
- Very Slow - 5 seconds (the easing curve makes the last second or so of travel miniscule)
- Slow - 2 seconds
- Medium - 1.75 seconds
- Fast - 1.5 seconds
- Very Fast - 1.25 seconds
Here's the story file that demonstrates the timing. The second slide demonstrates how this can be used with a comparison. By mixing and matching animation types, you can create some pretty cool effects -- even with Storyline's limited animation support.
For seekers of instant gratification, here's the published output.

Thanks, Steve! Always wanted to know the exact timings and was "too lazy." I've done a lot of animations so far in my work so it's very helpful.
Also, one of the first things I put a feature request in for was the ability to set your own timings. Sometimes, even these defaults aren't good enough.
I found these estimates to be way off. Part of the error in the sample file is that you don't start your animations until 1 second into the slide. Even after making that adjustment, the "very slow" seems to take only about 3 seconds, with the "very fast" almost instantaneous.
You're right, Russell! The one second throws off the calculation of all of these by a second. On my publish, very slow takes the full 4 seconds. The easing curve makes the few pixels take a full second to finish. Very fast isn't instantaneous on my side, takes a quarter second.
Must be a bug in the animation code for very slow. It *nearly* completes in 3 seconds but moves a few pixels in the last second.
It would be nice if we could adjust these speeds somehow. I have text set at very slow and it's coming in way too fast....
I agree more control would be handy. You might like to submit a feature request ...
Alas still too slow for any type of Key frame animation. Still trying avoid Adobe Edge for HTML5 animation
– thanks Steve
Is there a way to control or prevent the "easing" of the motion? What I mean is, can we make the speed consistent instead of the slow beginning, fast movement, slow end?
Hi Jay!
This thread is a bit dated and I know I saw some users report issues in SL2 as you can see here. Can you let me know if you are utilizing the latest update to SL2? Was your project updated from SL1? If the latter, this issue is still in the hands of our QA Team.
Thanks for getting back to me Leslie. As it turns out, I'm a bit of an idiot. I didn't notice at all that the Direction and Speed submenus under Path Options were in a little section called ... Easing.
No worries Jay and I'm sure that doesn't make you an idiot. Glad you were able to find what you were looking for :) Happy Friday indeed.
