Selection Indicator Graphic

Ugh -
I've been trying to build some custom navigation similair to what was suggested in this video put out a couple weeks ago by the articulate folks:
http://learn.articulate.com/custom-navigation/
I've been trying (without success) to replicate the "selection indicator" graphic that he uses to indicate the selection of a layer.
Any suggestion on the shape formatting needed to make this illusion effective? I've been messing with various gradiants and colors for the last hour or so, and am waving the white flag.
Thanks!

Hi Greg,
I just threw something together that might set you on you way.
1 menu bar
1 layer
1 picture with 2 states (normal & hover)
the hover state has an extra almost transparent picture in addition
Cheers

This is pretty cool. I put a gradiant fill on the transparent bit and send it behind the folder icon. That gives it a bit of depth and doesn't obscure the folder.
Hi all,
Like I said, it is to put you in the right direction.
its a starter

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the assistance. Geert that is a good start, I think the color of my bar is impacting the level of depth that I am getting with my overlay.
Brett, do you have any specific gradiant color or shapes you used to achieve more depth to the image?
Hi Greg,
I did really have any specifics for the gradient other than I made it darker at the top and lighter at the botton so it gives a lighting effect of light coming from above (which is usually where it comes from...) I used grays for the gradient shades.
Hi Greg - I'll get this tutorial posted by tomorrow--we're receiving a lot of requests on this one. I did post the graphic and a quick sample created in Storyline over in this thread: http://community.articulate.com/forums/p/21427/119035.aspx#119035
Thanks David!
For now I think I'll "borrow with pride" the premade overlay image from the thread you linked and see how that works.
Any other tips or tricks you can add onto this would be awesome!
Enjoyed seeing you and Tom at the CCASTD workshop last week. Happy Thanksgiving!
Borrow as you like--we always remove the homing beacons before sharing
Glad you enjoyed last week. Gotta say you have a really great chapter in Chicago. I hope we can do it again next year!
Hey gang, here's a quick Screenr tutorial on how you can create the indicator graphic in Storyline or PowerPoint:
Also attached is the source file used in the tutorial!
And more more technique for creating the effect:
