Explaining complex processes?

Apr 16, 2014

Hi,

I work for a healthcare software company and have been tasked with coming up with an e-Learning module which will provide an overview of the real life operating model and why, when and what software interactions occur. The e-Learning will be aimed at any new employees to help them get their heads around what it is that we do.

The operating model is quite complex and has many variables so I'm struggling to think of how best to display this visually to best cement where the user is in the process and what is occurring.

The best idea I have had is to make the e-Learning concept a patient journey through the operating model. I thought I would use 7 bars on the screen to group the process into steps and then use a slide with lightboxes for each bar to explain the variables and key concepts, followed by a section on each of the 7 bars/groups with more detailed information focusing more on the software functionality.

I thought I would use something similar to this template: http://community.articulate.com/downloads/p/143372.aspx

I wonder if anyone can think of any tweaks to improve my idea or if anyone has a better idea of achieving this?

Any examples or ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Louis

Hi Louis - Any tabbed-style of layout would work well for what you're looking to do. As an example: One of my portfolio items explains a 'complex' procedure of bathing a cat (excuse the subject matter). The steps are tabbed, and when selected, the user is brought to a new layer. Within this layer, there are also hyperlinks that launch popups, which can contain images/interactions/more text.

See example: http://ashleychiasson.com/Samples/Cat_Bath/story.html
