Tips for working with feedback layers in Quizmaker

Quizmaker '13 has arrived and with it, an enhanced ability to provide customized feedback for your learners via feedback layers! Feedback layers allow you to build feedback in Slide View, which means that you have access to all of Quizmaker's great creation tools! Here are three important tips for getting started:

1. How to Activate the Feedback Layers in Quizmaker '13

When you’re in Quizmaker's Slide View, you’ll notice a panel on the right hand side of the interface. Simply select Feedback by Question and you’ll notice the feedback layers appear at the bottom of the panel:

Once the feedback layers appear, simply select one of the layers and begin making changes to the layer on the slide.

Note: If you want to provide feedback “By Choice”, go to Form View and select “By Choice” and add text for each choice. As you do, the layers will appear in Slide View. Also, If you give the learner more than one attempt at a question, a “Try Again” layer will also appear.

2. Text Feedback is Coordinated Between Form View and Slide View

If you make a change to the text feedback in Form View, you’ll see that the text is also updated in Slide View. The opposite also holds true. Quizmaker '13 does a great job of coordinating the activity between the two views. This makes for a seamless experience as you update your text feedback. So feel free to work from whichever view you feel more comfortable in.

3. Each Quizmaker Feedback Layer Can Contain Unique Content

Having access to the feedback layers in Slide View means that you also have access to all of the great slide design tools! You can add images, characters, text, audio and video, web objects, etc. You can build out the feedback layer like any other slide in your course. So get creative and imagine the possibilities! Perhaps a YouTube video plays if your learner answers a particular question incorrectly? Or maybe you use a character from the built-in character pack to provide a visual response?

This is so timely - I just upgraded from Quizmaker 09 to 13 and was about to look for some help with feedback layers. Once you've set a new Feedback Master layout in one quiz, is there a way to copy or import it to another quiz? I'm having the same problem I've seen a couple of others posted about where my quiz has lengthy feedback, so it's shrinking to the point of being unreadable. Instead of adding a scrolling pane I just created a new bigger box in the Feedback Master. I'd like it to be identical in a different quiz I'm making. Does that make sense? Thanks, Mike!

Hi Allison, Great question (I'll make sure to add it to my post next week)! And you sure can copy over the Feedback Master. Simply copy the feedback master from the quiz where you have it as you'd like it...and then in your new quiz, go to feedback master and paste. It should carry the attributes over and create a 2nd feedback master that you can choose from. Mike

Hi Jessie, And welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community! Changes you make to the feedback Master layouts should be applied to the question feedback layer layouts as well. For example, the feedback master has a layout for correct, incorrect, try again, etc. These will correspond to the feedback layers on a question. It's also possible you have the wrong layout selected for a layer. If so, try this. Select a feedback layer for your question. Go to the slide and right click your mouse. Select layout and make sure the layout is the one you desire for that layer. I hope this helps. Kate, In Storyline, tip #3 would apply in that you can have unique feedback on each of the layers. The first two tips are more Quizmaker specific due to the specific way that you make them happen and the structural differences between the programs (for example, Storyline doesn't have a form view). Is there any way to hide the results slide? I have the quiz set to unlimited attempts with feedback layers, so there is no need for users to see results. I know how to do this in Storyline, but can't seem to find a way in this new QM. Thanks! Carol

Carol and Kimberly, In Quizmaker 13... Select Edit Results Slide then in the right hand column, select "Result Type" and then "None" from the drop down pane. Mike

Is there a way to collect employees typed comments and user id to a question. For example: I want to ask : "Have you seen any violation of the company policiy on harrassment? I want to display a freeform text box for a 250 character response from the employee. I need to capture this data for reporting too. Thanks for any ideas. kdb

Hi Kim, Some LMSs might be able to capture that data on say, a survey, or short answer question. I'd start on the LMS side and see what it's capable of collecting and then run a test using a short answer question to see how that gets pulled into the LMS. Mike

Hi Kim, if your LMS can't capture or report that data, another option I've had great luck with is using a web form/survey tool to capture it. I like Survey Gizmo and a Google Docs form would work too. There are a lot of options. Those both will give you the data in a nice easy to use spreadsheet format.

Hi Mike, Kind of a big problem I have here: Quizmaker crashes EVERY time I click the 'Import Audio' button. Do you have a workaround for this? And when will Articulate develop an update/fix for this issue? It has also been a problem for one of my contractors on her own computer and software. Thanks, Dan

Dan, Sorry that this is happening, that's certainly not expected behavior. Please file a support case so our team can take a look and trouble shoot. They'll be able to help you ascertain if it's something Quizmaker specific, or if there is a setting on your machine that might be conflicting. Hi Mike, My question is about the feedback in quizmaker: Can the incorrect box be moved within the screen? I have created a quiz using multiple choice and would like to show the learner the correct answers - but the box hides the text. Also, I have used hotspots and sometimes these are hiden by the box. Try going to your Master view for the slide with the "incorrect box" and then you can adjust it the way you want to. Carol

Thanks Carol, This helped...however, is it possible to just select one slide for the box to be in a different location? Because when I adjusted the master - it adjusted the location of all slides and all correct and incorrect boxes. Regards, Nicky

Nicky, Sounds like you may have moved the feedback box on the main master slide (the parent). You can actually remove it from the parent, and then either: 1. Copy and paste it to each of the children slides. Create a new custom layout on the slide master and use that. OR 2. Just delete it off the parent and then go completely custom on each of the slide feedback layers and add your own backing to each layer as you build your quiz (more work on this option).

Does Articulate QuizMaker 13 support one click submit with image map hot spots? i.e. without having to click the submit button. If so how do you set this option? Thanks. 30 Jun 2014

Hi David, Quizmaker 13 doesn't have that ability. Storyline, however, would give you that functionality as you could tie a submit trigger to the clicking action. Mike

Hi MIke, That's a real shame. Can this feature be added as we want to be able to do SCORM quizzes that do graphic simulation. This is a seriously needed function. Otherwise can Storyline do everything QuizMaker can? Thanks, David

David, I think you'd find that Storyline can meet your needs. I'd download the free 30 day trial and give it a test. You'll find the quizzing environment to be very similar to Quizmaker so the learning curve is pretty gentle. Mike

Mike, I have downloaded the StoryLine trial. Can you relocate the PREV and NEXT buttons in StoryLine Review mode? i.e. move them close to the centre or left? They are displaynig off the page in our Moodle LMS as a SCORM 2004 package.
