create personalized e-learning assessments

When you create learner assessments, you sometimes want to give learners custom feedback about their choices. The content of your feedback matters—and so does the way you present it! With Articulate Storyline 2, you can easily use custom text and even video and audio for personalized feedback which you can customize by answer choice as well as by functional location on the feedback master or on individual feedback layers. Let’s take a look—I’ll use a standard multiple choice question as the example.

Option 1: Feedback by Choice

The easiest path to custom feedback is to provide the learner with a specific text feedback for each answer. To start, go to form view and select the feedback dropdown and then select By Choice.

When you do this, you’ll notice a couple of things. First, you’ll see that in form view, you now have the ability to add feedback next to each answer. You can quickly add your custom text feedback in this area.

You’ll also see that Storyline creates a new feedback layer for each answer. So instead of the standard correct/incorrect layers, you’ll have a feedback layer for each choice.

And remember, you can now edit the text either in form view, as you see in the image above, or on each slide layer. The changes will show up in each location.

PRO TIP: Customize the Feedback Master Layouts

Want to jazz up the standard gray feedback box? No problem—you can create, delete, and edit your persistent design elements right in the feedback master. Here’s how:

  • Click on the view tab in Storyline and select Feedback Master
  • Hover over the slides to see their labels (Correct or Incorrect)
  • Select the feedback slide you want to alter
  • Design away!

Each type of feedback can have its own unique set of characteristics. Maybe your correct feedback has Arial font, but the incorrect feedback uses Calibri. Or maybe the background colors are different. The cool thing is, it’s entirely up to you. Here’s an example of creating a custom look on the feedback master (left) and what it looks like after a little editing on a question slide (right).

Option 2: Customize the Feedback Layers

Once you have your persistent elements set for the feedback layers, you can further customize the feedback on individual layers with Storyline’s awesome design tools. For example, to change what the text says, or to add a character for some visual feedback, here’s what you do:

  • Go to slide view
  • Select a feedback layer (it will appear on the slide)
  • Add your content to the slide (which is actually the feedback layer)

You can add all sorts of awesomeness to the feedback layer—characters, videos, and web objects … you can even go ultra-personalized by firing up your webcam and recording yourself giving video feedback for each answer choice! Okay, that might be a little extreme, but you get the picture (haha).
