Escape rooms are having a moment. According to Room Escape Artist, the number of companies in the US that offer escape room experiences has quadrupled since 2015!

If you’re not familiar with this adventure game, here’s the gist: you and a group of people are locked in a room, and you need to discover clues and solve logic puzzles in order to get out. That’s tough enough as is, but many escape room companies up the ante with tense or spooky themes.

This type of activity lends itself perfectly to e-learning. You can test your learners’ ability to problem-solve and think on their feet. It’s also a great way to grow your Storyline skills by building drag-and-drop activities, click-and-reveal interactions, and more.

In a recent E-Learning Challenge, we asked the community to share their escape room interactions. Here are some of our favorite examples and downloads.

  • This example by James Addoms is everything people want from an escape game: it’s atmospheric, challenging, and tons of fun.
  • Jackie Van Nice turns up the heat in this baking example by adding a ticking countdown timer.
  • This lighthearted example by Jodi Sansone asks learners to scan their environment for clues.
  • Chris Hodgson brings video game–style side-scrolling to his escape room example.
