Animating Simple Motion Paths

May 03, 2012

I'm not finding any way to do a simple motion path animation ....am I missing something or is this just not possible?

If it's not possible, could I create the motion path animation in PPT and somehow export it so I can import into Storyline?

Thanks!

Hi Allisun,

Storyline does not currently support motion paths.  Please review the following article for more information:

If you have PowerPoint 2010, you can do a Save and Send in PowerPoint and choose to create a video and import that into Storyline.

You could even use a series of fade in and fade out animations with multiple versions of the same object in the Timeline to simulate motion.

Hi Allisum,  unfortunately you can't do motion path animation in SL. This was one of the biggest complaints that the beta testers had with Storyline.

There are some things you can do to simulate motion paths in Storyline - by using layers, states etc, but if  you have PowerPoint 2010  you can create the motion path in PowerPoint and then save the powerpoint file as a windows media file.

You can then use the import video option in SL to bring in the animation.

Hi Joe,

We’re building very powerful animation capabilities for a future release.  Be sure to subscribe to the Articulate Word of Mouth Blog to receive notifications when new updates and features are released.

Brian, please make sure this is just not a rehash of powerpoint.  This is the perfect opportunity to really showcase storyline

Another option is to create the animation you want in a single-slide PPT file and publish it (obviously using Studio).  Drill down into one of those newly created folders and you'll find a SWF (I think it has "...slide..." or "...bg..." somewhere in the name").  Insert this into SL and it works a treat.  Okay, the file size can be larger than you'd like but the effect IME works perfectly well.  One (just one) of the many great features of SL is that you can resize the SWF window to any size you want, therefore you should find a size that suits your SL output exactly as required.

Or you can just have the series of images that last, say, .25 seconds that butt up next to each other on the timeline (one ends when the next one begins) without the animation.  But on the slide itself, they slightly overlap.  Used the align command to space them equally on the slide.

Something I did during the beta:  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21556107/UFO-flight%20output/story.html

Not my first choice to do this (I'd probably do the SWF or video from PowerPoint) but it can be done this way totally in SL.

After having updated my Storyline-version today, I'm having troubles getting my animations shown correctly. I've set up the animations in powerpoint 2010 using fade in and fade out. Then I import the powerpoint into Storyline, but only some of the animations are working and some of them are not. I can't seem to find a different in the set up of those that are working and those who are not - can you help me?

Hi Brian,

Any time frame for those new animation capabilities. Something like object properties animation is fundamental to me.

Many thanks.

Hi, Dominique!    Some workarounds are just never fun.  We are with you on your frustration.

I believe the best way to handle situations like this is to make a cogent and professionally-written feature request to Articulate.  And in it make a brief business case and reasons why any change or new feature makes sense.

The more people request things like this with a feature request, the better.  Submitting feature requests is the best way to make your needs known.  Believe me, it works.
