Corrupt Engage Interaction Files

Aug 20, 2014

I have two Engage Interactions that can no longer be opened. When I try, I get the error message "(File name) is corrupted and can no longer be opened." I have tried several times and occasionally I get the error message "file is already open. Close it in Engage and try again." It also says "This project may have been created with an earlier version of Engage" every once in a while. I am using '13, Update 2. Update 3 did not like me or my PC very much.

The PC is backed up to Carbonite and I have tried every previous version of the files. Can I recover anything from the files?

Hi Phil!

Unfortunately, you may need to move to Update 3 if you wish to open these files. If you'd like to share your .intr file first so that I can verify, that would be great.

Here is the documentation, which would affect your own files as well:

When collaborating with other content developers, it's important that everyone is using the same version of Articulate software. For example, if you create a course in Articulate Studio '13 Update 3 and another developer attempts to edit it in Update 2, the second developer may see an error message similar to this:

"This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of [product name]."
The solution is to install the latest version of Studio '13, which can be downloaded here.

Hi Leslie, I am having this problem as well. I collaborated on a project for grad school. My partner could open my files, but I cannot open hers. We ended up having her do the final packaging and publishing for the class, but now I'd like to be able to use the project as a porfolio piece, and cannot open, edit, or republish due to this error. We used the Articulate Package to send files back and forth.

I know we were both using Studio '13, but perhaps we had different updates. If I upload her Engage and Quizmaker files, do you think you could open them and save them to Pesenter Update 2: 1403.2018?

I have an enterprise version through my work, so am unable to run updates without going through my IT department. I attached one of the files to start.

Thanks Leslie - I thought about recreating her sections, but this is just one of several, and she had narration in some of the engage interactions. Since the error message I am receiving is that it may have been created in an older version, would it make a difference if I updated my version?

I feel bad having her go through all the trouble of updating and resending everything and would rather find a solution myself, if possible.

Hi, I was able to download the latest version of Articulate Studio (Update 4) and am now able to open the files. That leads me to believe I had the older version of Articulate and she had a newer version, though the error message was: "This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of Quizmaker." The similar error message I got for Engage was: "The file "C://.....document path...." is corrupted and cannot be opened." It seems like the error messages should have said that I needed a newer version. Regardless, one problem is now solved by upgrading.

But, there is no audio included. I know that there was audio in the Engage and Quizmaker files when she exported them to the Package. Is there a reason the audio would be stripped out? If she re-sends to me, is there a way to ensure that the audio is embedded?

As part of the package, all her audio on the actual PowerPoint slides came over in the PPTA, but none of the audio within the Enage or Quizmaker slides did. We both followed the directions on exporting a package, and then posted the zip file of the package to Google drive for retrieval, since it was too large to send via email.

I have the screen shots of the errors I received in Enage and Quizmaker. The last photo in the attachment is the directory of all the files in the package. As you can see, some of the files are quite small (200-900KB) - these are the ones with no audio, but they should have audio. The other Engage and Quizmaker files have audio added. I had created these originally, and sent them to my partner in a package. She then added her files and repackaged the entire project to send back to me. The ones I created maintained their audio, but her files did not.

The only other thing that I've noticed that could be causing issue is the name of the files as yours looks pretty long based on the screenshot that you shared.

Be sure that the file paths to your projects and published output are well under the 260-character limit imposed by Microsoft Windows. (Publishing adds characters to the file path you selected. If it exceeds 260 characters, your published output will be incomplete.)

Avoid using special characters, accents, or symbols in your file paths and file names. Learn more about naming conventions in this Microsoft article.

If you still feel that you need to reach out to support for assistance, you may do so and perhaps they can drill down to errors that are occurring and help you get to the bottom of this issue.
