Engage Interactions not opening from PowerPoint

Jan 17, 2013

After inserting an Engage Interaction into a presentation, I can't open it for editing by clicking on the "Edit in Engage" button on the placeholder slide. It tells me that it can't find the interaction; and that I should locate it myself. After finding the interaction file- the same error appears, telling me Engage can't locate the file I'm trying to edit. Even though I JUST found it.

I'm sure this is part of the problem- but I recently HAD to move all my files from my C: drive to the network drive. There's nothing I can do about that. Our IT department doesn't want me keeping such huge files on the C: drive because they said I'll be more likely to lose them there because they are running short on memory. So I replaced ALL of my interaction & quiz slides because they refused to work- even though they are all still in the same folder.

Any idea what's going on and how I can fix it?

Hi Larissa.

Unfortunately we don't recommend working on a network drive and it may cause erratic behavior, exactly like what you are experiencing. If you are running low on space on your hard drive, I would recommend seeing if you can:

  1. Get a bigger hard drive.
  2. Get a secondary internal hard drive to store your documents.
  3. Last resort would be to use an external hard drive attached via a USB cable.

The reason that most folks can't work with their content on a network drive is that they don't have sufficient permissions to access the drive. I would definitely move your files back to your local drive for now and then reconnect the interactions that way. You might want to see if they have a way to back up your local drive to an external drive or some other process to back up your files.

I've attached just one of the files. I have 18 interaction files and 4 quizzes. It only works if I open the file from my C: drive (into Engage) and then re-add it into the presentation every time I have to edit it. But this process takes 10 minutes longer than it should. (As my computer is especially slow.) Thanks for any help in advance!

Hi Larissa,

Thanks very much for the file. I was able to open it and insert it through Presenter, as well as publish and test it without issue. So, the file looks good.

You mentioned that your machine is pretty slow. I can sympathize with this, anyway your IT department would consider updating the machine for you? I know this isn't a solution, but you may really want to consider pursuing this so you don't have to dedicate additional time on your projects, simply because the machine is slower. If that's totally out of your question, perhaps your IT department would consider at least performing some maintenance on the machine. This could possibly make a difference, depending on the age of the machine and how long it's been in use.

Since this is also happening with multiple files, we can try some additional steps to troubleshoot this, but in all honesty I don't believe it will help with the slowness you're experiencing. Please take a look at this support article and follow the steps outlined for your operating system. Depending on your settings, you may need to contact  your IT department for assistance.

Let me know how things go. Hopefully, we'll be able to get everything up and running for you.

Thanks again, Larissa!

Christine
