Engage not updating
Jun 03, 2014
I'm using Articulate 13 to open a presentation developed in Articulate 09. The presentation updates correctly, but when I try to open the Engage interaction, I get the attached error message. I've opened several other presentations along with Engage interactions without any error. Any ideas why this one is having issues? Is there a way to rescue the data from it? particularly the voiceover files?
I attached the interaction as well if that helps.
Thank you,
Jesse

Hi Jesse,
Thanks very much for providing the file!
I didn't see an error message in your post, but I think I see what's happening. When I opened the file, I got a notice that the project needs to be upgraded. Continuing, I got a message stating that I should close any unneeded programs and save the project. At that point, the process hangs and Engage locks up.
It does look like the backup file was created, and it's the same size as the original.
I tried renaming the file (because I saw a lot of special characters in the name "-,&" and spaces). That seemed to make a little improvement on my end, but resulted in the same prompt and hanging.
I opened the file on another machine running Studio '09 and saved the project as a new file, with a new (short) name. It seems to open fine in Engage '09, but the new file results in the same issue.
Can you please let me know what specific error you're receiving, and if you still have access to Engage '09, does it open properly in that version for you?
Thanks!
Christine – I attached theerror message I was receiving, if that helps (sorry it didn’t come through thelast time).
I don’t still have access to Articulate ’09. Is there a way Ican download it without it overwriting my Articulate ’13?
Does this help? And is there any other information I canprovide?
Thank you for taking the time to look into this,
Jesse
Hi Jesse,
Your error is completely different from the prompts I see:
I recommend renaming that project file, first. Also, I noticed you're not working off of your C drive - please make sure you place the project on your local hard drive, then try upgrading again.
Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.
Also, you can still use both Studio '09 and Studio '13 products. However, you cannot have both versions installed at the same time on the same machine.
What you could do, is uninstall '13 and install '09. At that point, you could publish this interaction with the earlier version. When you're finished you could reinstall '13. Another option would be to simply install '09 on a second machine - this way you'd have access to both versions.
I can continue testing the file, as well, if you'd like. It may take me some time to break down the file and see if I'm able to pinpoint the issue, but I'd be happy to try.
Thanks, Jesse!
Christine
Christine - Thank you for your help. I tried all of your suggestions above, but the only thing that worked was opening it in '09 and resaving it. After that, when I reinstalled '13 and opened it again, it converted without error.
Thanks,
Jesse
That's wonderful, Jesse!
I'm very happy to hear that's working for you now, I was concerned that the content wouldn't be recovered, but it was a good sign that it would still open in '09.
Thanks very much for keeping me updated, I appreciate it.
Have a great day,
Christine
