Articulate Online Freezing During Viewing Frequently

Just launched two courses for a client in Articulate Online from Studio '09.  It seems that about 50% of the time, users are finding the courses will freeze and not advance to the next screen.  There is no typical place where this happens.

If they exit the content window and relaunch, they can resume at the place they left and finish successfully.

What might be the causals?  Are there any tips I can offer?

One of the courses is a very simple overview that's only 15 minutes and the other is a 29 minute course. Both have audio narration. As I said, there appears to be no rhyme or reason to when it freezes or where in the two courses it freezes.

Hi Ann,

Are you able to replicate the issue on your own system? One thing to have your users confirm, is that they're up to date with the system requirements listed here for viewing AO content.  You mentioned audio narration, but are the courses video or image heavy as well? Depending on if it's the same image throughout, you might want to look into placing it on a master slide instead of on every individual slide, as each element of a slide is included in a .SWF file.  If you build a presentation that contains a common element or background image on each slide without using master slides, that same element would need to be downloaded multiple times throughout the presentation.  However, if that element is included in a master slide, it will only need to be downloaded once.

I am able to replicate the issue.  It happened about 1/3 the time that I viewed the courses.  The content is image heavy (lots of people images) - lots of different images!  So I think you've hit the gist of it and I know to reduce the number of images for future courses and consider if I can use some duplicates and do it from the master instead.

The good news is that it will resume and allow completion... and frankly their internet is not always stable either so it probably influences the problem.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the additional information, and if they're internet isn't "stable" that could definitely be contributing to the problem of loading up a lot of images at one time, and the internet connection timing out. I'm glad that the Resume works for them though, and please let us know if you need anything else!

I know this is an older post but would like to know if their are any additional suggestions on this topic.

I was looking for an easy way to distribute individual modules to my team outside of our LMS system - easy one link style - which the Articulate Online seemed a perfect solution.

Here is my problem: In my testing, about 1/2 - 2/3'rds of the people going through the module it locks up. There is not specific point at which this happens, it seems almost random in nature. I have been able to experience this myself and the stop point is not common among users or myself.

The module is pretty light, zip size is only 9,160 KB. I know the reload option works and resume accordingly but that is not a viable option when rolling out to my employees or trying to get buy in from my company owner for subscription purchase.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,

Since it doesn't seem to happen at a consistent point, I'd look into the browser and Flash version that you and other users are accessing the courses through. The viewing requirements for Articulate Online are detailed here.

If you're able to find a common factor there, that may help isolate the issue and determine which browser you would recommend users access the course through or if there is an overall problem with accessing content in that browser that our team could look into.
