Hi Ganesh. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Since Tin Can is normally used for content hosted on external LMS hosts, I'm confused why you'd want to use it with Articulate Online. Currently, Articulate Online does not support it, because Articulate Online only works with our content.

Can you give a little more information about why you'd like to see it supported in AO? Maybe I can get a better answer for you if I know what you're trying to accomplish.

Thanks!

Virginia Butler

I am wondering about this because we are having trouble launching the content from an ipad  with user authentication through the AO API. When we attempt through a desktop it works fine. When we attempt through an ipad we get the content not found message.

After reading the above article, there seemed to be three possible causes. We ruled out the first, "You no longer have access to a content item hosted in Articulate Online" because we do still have access on a desktop.

We looked at the second possible cause "Your LMS or web server requires users to login to view content" and in response we tried this option, "Publish your Storyline content for LMS, but do not mark the box to Use Articulate Mobile Player on iPad. (If you include the HTML5 option when publishing, your content will launch in mobile Safari when viewed on an iPad.)" and we thought this would bypass the mobile player and be a better, more consistent user experience. However, the results was 'file not found' when trying to view the course on an ipad...still works from a desktop.

The mention of Tin Can API led us to believe this would solve our problem.

So, that is why I am wondering how to get the benefit of the Tin Can API while being hosted through Articulate Online and viewing a course on an ipad after logging into our custom website because we need to track progress.

Help!

Hi Virginia,

As I mentioned previously, Tin Can isn't supported by Articulate Online. You should be able to run the content without this type of tracking.

Having said that, the error you're seeing isn't expected behavior. Are you able to submit the file with our tech team for testing? You'll be able to attach the .STORY file for your project on the second page of the form. If you do submit the files, please share the case number with me so I can follow the progress of this issue (you're welcome to share it with me here, or in a private message).

Thanks Virginia! Hopefully we'll be able to find out what's causing this

Hi Christine,

Thanks for your reply.

As you know iPad is the most popular table so far, so we want to develop and publised our content for iPad which we can at the moment. But most customers are not interested only running the courses on iPad, they want to be able to track the results as well. For tracking we need an LMS. However there are not many LMS's which are iPad compatible. So I was looking for solution and LMS's which can run on Ipad. During that process I also came across this article from Articulate support

http://www.articulate.com/support/kb_article.php?product=st1&id=1fy8vvf3ukr9

Just check the LMS tracking section in the article and it says

LMS Tracking : Yes, with Tin Can API-supported learning management systems, such as Articulate Online

However I was not sure if AO actually supported the Tin Can, As per my knowledge it supports Tin Can but the actual implementation is still not done. Correct me if I am wrong

Ideally we want to run our courses on Ipad through Articulate mobile player, as it produces a nice UX, but also be able to pass on results to LMS when assessments are completed which seems only possible when LMS is Tin Can compatible.

I hope I have clarified my understanding.

I also have another question on your comment

"Articulate Online does not support it, because Articulate Online only works with our content. "

What do you mean by "Only works with our content"  does it mean content produce by your company or content produce by your products.?

We currently use Articulate Storyline and I can output it to Tin Can

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Articulate Online only supports content published by Articulate content development tools, as far as I know. Presenter and Storyline are both supported. When deployed to AO, Storyline published content uses the Tin Can API to communicate but the packages published to AO are AO specific, they aren't a standard package like SCORM.

Content published to AO from Storyline will be trackable via the iOS app as well as the desktop / html5 outputs. When launched from AO, the iOS app will not download content for offline viewing. Tracking is only enabled while connected.

Hi Steve,

Many thanks for your reply.

It has definately cleared some of the doubts I had in my mind.

I have 2 scenarios which I am trying to work out

Scenario 1 : Publish the content using Storyline in a Tin Can Format and then deploy it to an LMS (not AO) which is Tin can Compatible

In the above scenario, will I be able to track the assesments when launched the content using AMP  (ipad app) using an iPad?

My courses runs very smoothly when they run an AMP but I am not sure if tracking would work. I am trying ot find a solution for the above scenario.

2. If I publish the content using Storyline in a SCORM Format and then deploy it to an standard LMS, Will I be able to track the assesments when Launched the content using AMP using iPad

Is this possible?

Please advise.

Hi, Ganesh -

Scenario 1 should work and has functioned in my experiments launched through SCORM Cloud in AMP.

Scenario 2 will not work. The way SCORM is built requires javascript and launch of content is within a sandbox that requires javascript to maintain connection and communicate. You should be able to launch HTML5 content and track through SCORM on mobile devices but AMP won't track this way.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your quick reply.

Scenario 1 is what I am most interested in so I just need to find an LMS which is TIN CAN compatible or whenever such thing is ready.

Are there any? I know Moodle is in process but not ready yet.

Scenario 2 , I knew it would not work but I needed an second opinion, so thanks for that.

Anyway, running course using HTML5 on iPad in Safari produces a horrible user experience hence interested in Tin Can solution.

Thanks once again for your help.

Have a good weekend.

Ganesh

Check out the LMS early adopters. The Experience API 1.0 will be released tomorrow and we expect more LMS announcements to follow (see The Experience (Tin Can) API: Turning 1.0)

If you do not want advanced (complicated) features that full blown LMS's provide you can use Wordpress to host your Storyline content. You can use GrassBlade xAPI Companion plugin to host/launch/track your content from wordpress. If you have several pieces of content, and want to structure them in the form of Courses/Lessons/Quizzes etc and want more LMS features, you can use LearnDash LMS along with GrassBlade on wordpress.

Along with Storyline content if you want to have Tin Can quizzes on wordpress you can get Gravity Forms plugin along with their Quiz Addon, and use GrassBlade and GrassBlade Gravity Forms Addon, and you will have a full blown, simple, easy to use Tin Can quizzing platform. Great thing is that everything I mentioned can work together.
