Yes, it is! You can give all avatar options at the beginning and give each of them a trigger and a true/false variable.
e.g, when Avatar 1 is selected, turn Variable "Avartar1" to true (from false). Then in the next slide, where the learner is supposed to see the chosen avatar, create a trigger of "Change state of Avatar to Avatar 1 when timeline starts" with the condition "if Avatar1 is true".
Not sure if there is any other way, but hope that helps. :)
See attached file that shows an example how to select an avatar for subsequent slides. That was done in Storyline though. I noticed you posted in the Presenter forum (not sure if that was intentional).
Curious...I am building a game and would like to allow the learner to select a male or female avatar at the start of the game. Throughout the game I would love for the selected character to display various emotions/poses. Is this possible?

Yes, you can add states (each state representing a pose) to each character and then use triggers thoughout the game to change states of the selected character.
This works great. The only problem I'm experiencing is a smooth transition from one slide to the next. When the male character is selected as the slide fades in....the female character briefly displays and then the male displays. Not as smooth as I would like it.

Without seeing your file I can only guess that you put one of the character selection choices in the Normal state. Try using a blank Normal state instead.
