Articulate Quiz Freezing in Moodle

Jun 20, 2017

Hello!

I have a course through Moodle with a SCORM package. In some of the quizzes, the student will get a message that the question was "incorrect" before they ever selected or submitted an answer. The screen looks like the picture attached. The student can hit the X and get rid of the red "incorrect" bar but cannot select an answer, go forward, or retry the quiz. They are stuck at that question.

Is there a way to prevent this or get past it in the published course?

My email is kelly.stanek@ucdenver.edu

Hey Kelly, welcome to the community!

Thanks for including the screenshot--that was really helpful. It looks like that quiz slide is somehow in review mode, and I'd like to take a closer look at your file to see why that's happening.

Can you share your Articulate Package with me?  If you'd like to keep it private, use this form instead.

Hi there Justin!

I took a peek into Kelly's case, and I see that we were able to solve the issue by changing a setting on one of her quiz slides. This was a file-specific issue and not a bug.

Can you tell me more about the issue you're seeing? Also, are you using Studio '13 or Studio 360?

If you could share your Articulate Package with us, that would be really helpful. Simply go to the File tab on the PowerPoint ribbon, click Share, and choose Articulate Package.

That will create a zipped package that you can send to us here.

Hi Alyssa,

Just as an update, we were unable to fix the issue. The freezing quizzes still persist, and we have had to just work around it with individual patients.

We are re-designing our course with only one quiz so that we can try to avoid this issue.

I thought I should let everyone on this thread know!

And for those of you playing at home, here's my case outline:

"Some users, when getting a quiz for the first time, have no answers selected, but at the same time get the 'Incorrect' bar appearing. It's almost as if the quiz is in feedback/review mode. I think this behaviour is linked to Firefox, but I'm not 100% certain.

I've had success in recreating the issue if I use Firefox to get up to the quiz, and then close it, and then open it again.

If I do the same in Internet Explorer, no problem. As IE is using Flash fallback, perhaps it's related to the HTML output only?

Regardless, a quick Google search for 'Articulate Presenter Quiz Stuck' brings up heeeeeeaps of people experiencing the same issue. So far I can't find any who have had a resolution. Only those who have not, and have given up."

Once again, for anyone who finds this via the internet, here's the support reply I received.

I'll report back once I've tried what was suggested.

"Hi Justin,

Thanks for contacting Articulate Support!

I understand that you have reported an issue where users get stuck in a quiz when viewing your Presenter project.

Thanks for sharing your Presenter project files. I've published this to LMS, and uploaded this to a test LMS server, SCORM Cloud. Viewing the HTML5 output, I was able to replicate the issue that you have reported. See the course uploaded to SCORM Cloud here:

--LINK REMOVED--

This issue seems to happen only on Presenter projects with Restricted navigation, and with an inserted Quizmaker quiz with blank slides (non-question slides). Thanks so much for letting us know about this issue. I’ve logged it as a possible software bug.

In the meantime, as a workaround, you can try you can either change the navigation of the Presenter project to Free, or delete the blank slides in the question slide of your Quizmaker quiz, then republish your project.

From here, I’ll meet with my team to take a closer look so we can determine next steps. Depending on priority and risk, some bugs can be fixed quickly, while others take longer to resolve. Here's more information on how we identify and tackle bugs:

I’ll let you know as soon as we have an update on this issue. Thanks so much again for letting us know about this, and I’m sorry if it’s slowing you down.

Let me know if you need anything else!"

I was using Articulate '13, too. Thank you!

I absolutely agree. And I have had two people email me in the past year with this same issue, so I just directed them back to this tread to check up on it. I think there have been many experiences with this issue that I hope the staff can get the bug fixed! It is frustrating having a life-time license to something that does not work for us!

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Kelly and Justin,

I'm sorry this issue is still causing you such trouble.

Kelly, I saw you mention you're using the trial of Articulate 360, and I wanted to share that we have not seen this same issue appear in the Flash or HTML5 output of Articulate 360. So I hope that fixes it for you.  If you have any questions about upgrading to Articulate 360 - please feel free to reach out to our team here.

Hi Ashley, Leslie, Gren, Kelly, and anyone else! :)

Any progress on this one? I can consistently get the issue to occur by getting to a quiz, not completing it, and then closing and reopening it again using Chrome and/or Firefox.

I have been receiving an increasing number of support calls from my students regarding this issue. I keep instructing them that our eLearning Software provider are investigating a potential fix, and that they should use Internet Explorer in the meantime.

I replied to Gren last Monday, but haven't received a reply as of yet.

Hi Leslie,

I have heard back from Gren. Here is the reply:

Hi Justin,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear that the issue still persists.

We sincerely apologize for the delayed response. We've been testing the project further, and the issue occurs when viewing the HTML5 output, and exiting and resuming the course before taking the quiz. The only workaround we've found so far is to change the Navigation setting from Restricted to Free. Once this is changed, the quiz can now be taken properly, even when exiting and resuming the course prior to the quiz.

I've taken a look at the results, however unfortunately this will not be a suitable solution for us, as we require users to view specific content before being able to view the assessment component. I imagine quite a few of your customers would be in the same boat.

Ashley has mentioned something about Articulate 360 exports possibly providing a solution, so I've requested that Gren perform one of those and provide me with the output result.

I must say that although this issue is rather frustrating for both myself and my students, I have been impressed with the level of support received so far. So thank you to you and your team.
