Can a slide automatically call to an external relative link?

Feb 04, 2011

I am working on a project that will be published in Articulate and placed on a portal for access.  We have tested it and it works fine to publish to the web and the files are loaded on the portal with no problem.  Now the client has requested that something be placed in the training that indicates the user viewed all slides.  Not a problem if we were using an LMS.  My collegues in charge of the portal have created a work around and have asked me to insert a final slide and when it open have it call to a relative external link.

I could probably create a "pretend" button and place a hyperlink on the picture.  But, they prefer the user not see the URL and not peform a function (have to click something).

Any ideas?????

Hi Beth, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

You could do this by embedding an HTML page via the Web Object feature on your last slide:

Articulate 101: Bring the Web to Your E-Learning

The HTML page could be local (reside in published output) and could make a call to a web server whenever it's loaded, so you could determine when the page is hit.

You could do something like this:

  1. Add a Web Object as your last slide (Articulate -> Web Object).
  2. Specify a file name for your Web Object like this (NOTE: you'll add the HTML file after you publish):
  3. Click OK to add the Web Object and your placeholder in PowerPoint should look like this:
  4. Publish your course via Articulate Presenter.
  5. Create or copy your HTML file into the published output folder (alongside the player.html file, and your data and player folders):

It's important to add the file after you've published because if you do it before, Presenter will clear out any files already in your published folder destination - this is assuming you want to use the relative path approach.

If you're just adding a local Web Object and not concerned with the relative link requirement, you can use the method outlined here:

Insert Local Web Object in Articulate Presenter 09

Would this work?

P.S. Thinking more about your mention of the relative link, I assume the link that gets called in via the course / Web Object would be relative to the published output (coded in the Web Object you embed), so you could probably just insert the local Web Object from anywhere on your computer - or even point to any web or Intranet URL that calls in the external link.

Make sense?

How would I do this?

Here is an example of the link

Hi Beth,

I would go to tinyurl.com, insert that relative URL, and create a new short link for it.  Then, use the tinyurl in the web object.  This should work for you.  However, if you continue to have problems, let me know.
