Cannot Publish using Presenter '09 - Please help

Good afternoon

Today I had to re-publish 4 existing programmes to SCORM as the text in my powerpoint slides needed updating. The packages consist of slide - quizmaker quiz - slide (3 slides). I managed to make my amendments to 3 of the packages no problem, they published fine and all is well.

But the 4th one will not publish! It starts to publish but then I receive a message (see attachment) saying

'Unable to update quiz slide - Assessment 2.quiz

If this quiz is already open in Articulate Quizmaker then please close it and then republish'.


I have now re-saved, checked quizmaker, tried publishing from 3 different PC's with no luck. Quizmaker is definitely not open when I have been publishing, so I am stumped that this is the reason why it is failing?

Has anyone experienced this before? Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi Alkida!

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having with this. The first thing I would check is the location of the quiz file. Please make sure that you're working with local files.

Here's some additional information on working with local files:

If you are experiencing unexpected issues using Articulate software, here are some tips for managing your files which can help prevent issues.

1.  Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior. 

2. You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).

3.  Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

I would normally recommend restarting your machine, but it sounds like that wouldn't be a solution since you've attempted to work with this quiz on multiple machines. Can you try reinserting the quiz in question on the PowerPoint slide (i.e. delete current quiz then re-insert via Articulate > Quizmaker Quiz). When done, save the presentation then republish to a folder on your local drive. Let me know what happens after taking these steps.

Hi Christine

I am a colleague of Alkida's and was recently working on the publishing issue above. Many thanks for your help, your clear instructions allowed me to publish in the end.

It was indeed a rogue character, but not in the name of the SCORM, but the problem appeared to be the fact that there were spaces beside the "&" character, i.e. clinical & clinical, once this was changed to clinical&clinical on the folder name, all was well again.

Something so simple in the end, I am glad I am aware for the future now!
