Complete...Not Complete

May 26, 2016

Here's a conundrum.

Working on the 8th and final course in a series using Studio 13.  This one is a big one, so I published in Scorm 2004, 3rd edition.  I did all of the things I have done for the other courses to ensure that it gets noted as complete in the LMS and that the resume function works and the module navigation is unlocked after the course is completed:

  • Player setting: Always resume
  • Publish setting:  Complete/Incomplete, Tracking by Number of Slides Viewed
  • Javascript:  changed the variable for review mode in Configure file from true to false

So what's happening?  Well,

  • Resume is working if learner leaves the course right up until the very last slide
  • Review option is offered upon completion, but the learner has to start at the beginning and the navigation is locked as if they had never started the course
  • Complete
    • In the LMS the learner transcript shows that the course has NOT been completed, BUT the Review option is shown as if they have completed the course
    • In ScormCloud, when the course is completed I get a notification that it is completed, but if I re-launch the course I have to start again as in the LMS, AND my status is CHANGED to INCOMPLETE.  ScormCloud also indicated that I failed (both with the Complete and the Incomplete status).

What the heck?  I'm baffled.  I don't think it is an LMS thing because I had problems in both ScormCloud and in our LMS.

Here are the variables unique to this module (as compared to the other 7):

  • Length - this is super long...I thought perhaps it was an issue with the suspend data maxing out, so I published in Scorm 2004, 3rd edition.  (We tested it and the resume worked right up until the last slide, so I don't think the suspend data is the issue.)
  • No Passing Grade - in the other modules the learners had to prove themselves with an 80% passing grade, but with this module there is no passing grade.  That wasn't decided upon until after all of the quiz questions (which are really more learning tools than quizzes) had been made as graded questions.  Because of the report in ScormCloud that I did not get a passing grade I thought perhaps that the grading of the questions might have been the issue, so I made all of the questions worth 0... that didn't help.  I really don't want to recreate all of the quiz questions....(there are a bunch!) but perhaps if the questions were survey instead of graded we might not have this problem???  (But the Publish setting is Complete/Incomplete and is based on slides viewed not Pass/No Pass based on a score...so that doesn't really make sense.)

ANY IDEAS???

Hi Susan,

Thanks for reaching out here and sharing the steps you've gone through. You mentioned changing the configuration.js file as detailed here and that set up is stopping your course from being in review mode inside your LMS - and that could account for the change in completion that you're seeing when revisiting sections of the course.

As that article mentioned the tracking by slides viewed could be connected to that, so instead you could include one additional slide to track by  to the end of the course, asking learners to confirm they've completed it, then track the course by that quiz question and results slide.
