Compress Media? Should I....

Dec 13, 2011

Hello,

There is an option in PowerPoint 2010 to "Compress Media".  Would this be a good idea?  I'm not too sure about how this would cascade down and affect the quality of the images, smart art, inserted flash, etc....

It would be great to get the file sizes down and hopfully speed things up a bit.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Many thanks!

I'm not sure I have an answer, but I'm curious to see what the responses are. My understanding is that it's only compressing images (like JPG, PNG, etc.), and it's only changing the resolution of the images or actually deleting any part of the image you have cropped within PPT. I haven't noticed a difference in quality...

If I have a really large image (i.e., a stock photo at print res), I'll use Photoshop to change the size and resolution to something more manageable before I insert it into the slideshow.

Looking forward to seeing other opinions on this.

You can do this if you have inserted very large images in your presentation which can increase the size of the SWF files Articulate creates by quite a bit. Your best bet would be to dupe your presentation you are considering doing this with and testing it out to see the results. I've actually compressed plenty of presentations without issue.
