Display course structure in LMS?

Feb 24, 2011

Hi there, I want to display the course structure in the LMS. Please have a look at the screenshot for what it displayes at the moment.

What I want it to display is the entire structure of the course. For instance customer service part 1, question1,customer service part 2, question 2, etc. I think you get the massage.

Also, when a learner is unable to complete the course in one go due to an interruption or something, the learner must be able to complete the course on a later stage, but only from where he left off. I dont like the idea of a box popping up, asking if you want to continue where you left off. The learners are extremely illiterate in computer usage, so we want to minimise anything that could possible go wrong. The learner should just sit back and the things must just run by itself.

thanks!

Hello De Wet,

The Articulate Presentation, when published for the LMS, is one SCO for your LMS, so the only way to display the course structure is by using the left side navigation in the course which can be shown after a person launches your presentation.  In order to display a course structure similar to what you want, in your LMS, you would need to publish your Articulate presentation in smaller chunks and then use your LMS to group the SCOs together (Iike in a curriculum or something).

As far as the resume feature, if you go to your player template you can check the box that reads "When running in LMS, ignore Flash cookie".  If checked, the course will always resume by using the LMS’ bookmarking feature (if your LMS supports it). If unchecked, your content will resume using the LMS’ resume data, but will use the Flash cookie if the LMS does not support resume.

The key statement there may be the last sentence - your LMS may not support resume, which may be why you're seeing the Flash cookie prompting the user for resume...  Something to look into, for sure.

Check out this knowledge base article for more info: http://www.articulate.com/support/presenter09/?p=31

Hope this helps!

There is another option.   You could manually package a series of AP courses in AICC or SCORM as multi-modules.

Dave Moxon has a neat article on a new tool to do that for SCORM:  http://daveperso.mediaenglishonline.com/2010/03/25/use-ssp-to-track-multiple-quizzes-and-courses/

For AICC, I know of nothing.  But here's something (see attachment below) we produced our 3M developers who wanted to do this with AICC.  Adapt accordingly for your LMS.

Increasingly we are seeing a few folks trying this.

For us, rather than use a LMS frame that holds the content and the table of contents for the modules, our Saba LMS has a player template that launches the content in its own window.  So the player template becomes more a launch window.  We try and use that for all e-learning.  Not sure if other LMS's have such a player template for content.

We can also add a little verbage to that player template (not a lot but some).  Pretty restrictive but we can get some important learner help in that template.

An example of that template.  The header and footer we can customize (restricted size).
