Error message: unpacking publishsettings.xml...

Dec 02, 2015

I have a presentation built using Studio 13 that has somehow become corrupted.  It has worked fine through several versions/changes, but with the latest version, when I try using any Articulate function  - e.g. Edit in Engage, Preview, etc. - it gets hung up at the following point: unpacking publishsettings.xml...  and has to be shut down.

Any suggestions as to what's going on and how to clear this issue?

Thanks.

I am encountering the same issue. I originally thought maybe it was because of a corrupt PPT file, but after pulling slides into new presentations, I'm still experiencing same issue. The file works for a bit and I add quizzes and engage files one at a time. File works great, publish it, make an edit, publish, make an edit then Presenter crashes. When presenter crashes while publishing, my file becomes useless and I get the dreaded "unpacking publishsettings.xml" error. I then have to force quit app, restart computer and attempt to rebuild PPT again. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling Studio, made no difference. Please help!

I have already tried the "fixing a corrupt ppt file" instructions, even though the only problem I have is on the articulate side. Problems persisted. I just had my IT go try all the steps in the "Unexpected or Erratic Behavior in Articulate Studio '13" section. Problems persist. My IT guy did not want to reimage computer. Any other options?

Hi, Etsa -- Thanks for your reply and for letting us know that you have exhausted the troubleshooting measures previously recommended. I think at this point it might be best if you were able to work directly with our Support Engineers for additional technical insights. Please use this form to submit a case and we'll be sure to follow along with their progress.

Unfortunately, after submitting this issue no one from Articulate Support has ever contacted me to help resolve.

After uninstalling everything including my MS Office products and reinstalling, I was still getting the error message, even after recreating file over 10 times. Sometimes it would work for the day, but when I saved and returned later, error message would appear again. I managed to publish, before error resurfaced, so I have given up on that file and hope I never need to use again. I think the issue is a result of a poor installation and that any files created from that version are no good. Once I stopped using any of those files, I have not seen the error since. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Hi, Etsa -- Thanks for reaching out, and it looks like one of our Engineers replied with the following on 5/26/16 at 5:37 pm. Please check your SPAM email folder in case the message was routed there  in error:

"I understand that Presenter crashed when publishing the Presenter course.

Thanks for uploading the Articulate package. I was not able to replicate the issue and I was able to publish the Presenter project file. Please download the zipped published output from this link:

Thanks for letting us know that you already performed the troubleshooting steps in this link.

Please confirm if your working on your project file on your local hard drive (typically your C: drive). The reason I asked is because in some cases, working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior due to latency, such as file corruption, an inability to save changes, and loss of resources. See this article for more information."

Aiko, please take a look at the links shared above and let us know if the troubleshooting measure mentioned help you find improvement, as well.

Thanks Christie! I checked back through my inbox and junk mail and can’t locate this email, so thanks for sending. Maybe I entered the wrong email. I reviewed their suggestions and I have already tried all the troubleshooting steps with my IT dept. And yes, I am working on my project locally. Although at some point I did save to my network, then resave on my local computer. Maybe the file was corrupted during the transfer and it couldn't be resolved even when inserting slides into a new file.

I just wanted to give an update. Unfortunately, the support team was unable to replicate the error. Since contacting them, the issue has occurred two more times, but only on courses that contain videos. I'm beginning to think that's the culprit. I'm going to keep troubleshooting this issue and hopefully can narrow down possibilities. Aiko, what are your specs so I can compare? I'm working with PPT 2013 32-bit system and Presenter 13 using Windows 7. My PPT files are running about 30 mbs in size because they include videos in mp4 formats.

And I think I noticed a similar issue reported a year ago to the forum. Not sure if this was ever successfully resolved either. https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-presenter/crashing-when-i-click-any-button-in-articulate-tab#reply-267825

Just checking in. On 7/12 a rep from the Support Team offered a complimentary GoToAssist session so he could see the problem firsthand. I responded to his email immediately, and after no response, again the next day. No response and the problem continues. Unfortunately it just happened on a course with six videos, which I now have to rebuild. I suspect Studio can't handle videos, not sure if its specific to using mp4s. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Hi Etsa,

I still don't see a reply for today either - did you confirm it was going to Support@articulate.com? The form or that direct email address are the two ways around it - but if you are using that I'll ask our internal IT team to see if they can spot that these messages are being blocked or something else.
