Fuzzy videos

Jul 06, 2017

I have read several discussions about fuzzy videos and tried some of the solutions (optimal screen size, etc.) Unfortunately this does not seem to fix my problem. I am using Studio '13 - Replay to capture my screen and voice. When I publish these, they are clear in Media Player. I am editing (basically just cutting out flub ups) in Windows movie maker, publishing them as High Def MP4 (1920x1080) 29 fr/sec. These are super clear in Media Player.  When I insert them into an Presenter presentation to be published and used in our LMS, they are fuzzy!  It is very frustrating to be using Replay and getting such a poor result.  I have tried adding the video from Replay without editing and get the same result, so editing in Windows Movie Maker does not seem to be the issue....  I would appreciate any help on how to make this look better.   Here is a link to the presentation in SCORM cloud so you can see for yourself the fuzziness...

Yes here is one of the videos before it goes in... it plays nice and clear inside media player, but when I put it in presenter it gets fuzzy...

Hi Shari,

Hopefully Alyssa has a better solution for you but I'm not confident there is much she can suggest. I believe the issue is, you are compressing the video each time you render it. Once when you capture it and render it into an MP4, the second time when you add it to Powerpoint and publish using Presenter. Its like copying something over and over again, after a certain point it loses detail, also Powerpoint is brutal on video compression.

If possible you can avoid the whole issue by hosting your video on a service like Vimeo or Youtube and using the "Insert video from website" feature in Presenter. This will totally bypass the second and most damaging render in Powerpoint, and it should look very similar to your first render when launched from your LMS.

You would need to test to see if your LMS allows these links or if your organization has its own Media Server in-house. Just another option to consider.

Cheers,

OK, so here is another option for you but it is kinda ugly.

You need to export your original video into a non-compressed format. Either .mov or .AVI. This will create a huge file size, import that into PowerPoint and then publish your project.

The first video won't be compressed so the second render won't impact it so much, the issue with this approach is just sheer video size, hopefully your system and Presenter can handle it. It may also increase your overall project file size.

That is all I got!

Cheers,

Hi Shari,

You mentioned that you edit the MP4 in Movie Maker after you publish from Replay.

In Presenter, you can select Do not compress video at publish to prevent the video from being further compressed in your published output. This feature is only available for MP4 videos created with baseline, main, or high profiles. I'm not very familiar with Windows Movie Maker, but can you save the file with  baseline, main, or high profiles there?
