How to publish for Ipad and Iphone when hosting in an LMS

Jan 27, 2014

Hi,

We recently upgraded to 13 and we were very excited to have support for the iPad App . We REALLY REALLY wish there was also an a app for Andoird, 56 percent of our students have android devices, but that's not the question here (I've already submitted a feature request). The question here is this whole Tin Can API thing that's currently preventing the iPad app from viewing our presentations. We have people in our Admin area working on getting Tin Can API on our blackboard server, but I want to make sure I'm publishing correctly to allow the iPad app feature to work. When reading through the help documentation that I get when we try to view the lectures on an iPad with the app installed, it makes me thing that in addition to checking the boxes during publishing that create the iPad app version of the presentation, that we ALSO have to publish for LMS and select Tin Can API from the dropdown menu so the app knows to look for authentication.. Is this true?

OR, Is there a specific way I need to publish, IE which boxes do I need to check to publish my presentations (both for Presenter and all the other Articulate products) so that the Articulate iOS app will be able to view them? (assuming our admins figure out how to get Tin Can API running on our servers)

Thanks for any advice you can lend,

Caelyn

Hi Caelyn -  In order to get the presentation to play via the Articulate Mobile App you need to select

the "Use Articulate Mobile Player on iPad" setting when you publish.

If you are hosting the presentation on your LMS and want to report and track the learner's results.you also need to select "LMS" and select the Tin Can API as the output option. Your LMS has to support this format and your users need it download the Articulate Mobile App to their iPad.

Note there is no app for the iPhone so you might also want to select html5 as an output option.

Thanks for your reply

The first item in your list is self explanatory with the publish tool, but when we try to view one of the presentations on an iPad with the app, we get an error that tells us we NEED Tin Can API to be able to view any of our presentations hosted behind an LMS password protected system. IE we need Tin Can API whether we want to track anything or not, it's necessary just to view them on the iPad app because that's what makes the iPad app be able to authenticate our blackboard users passwords.

At this time our presentations have NO interactive content, they're just slides with narrated audio.Knowing this, do I need to publish to LMS with Tin Can API just to allow the iPad app to view our presentations, or can I just publish to web with the iPad check-boxes checked? Will the iPad app be able to authenticate the passwords of our LMS users if it's just published to WEB with the iPad boxes checked?

Also, I'm very dissapointed that the Articulate app only works on the iPad. I was disappointed enough that there was no app for Android, but now that I've been told that there isn't even an app for iPhone, that's a double disappointment. Not everyone owns an iPad, many people don't WANT an iPad. Is there that much work in making apps that will work on all iOS and on Android?

Of course all of this would be moot if you put back the MP3 creation tool or added a download button option for everyone (not just iPad users) so people could view them offline.
