Player Controls - LOCKED option navigation

Jul 17, 2014

Greetings,

I set a recent course player to "lock" to force 100% viewing. Between the course content and quiz, I set the navigation to "USER" with the NEXT button. However, the NEXT button command does not work. The course is stuck at the end of the content (embedded video MP4) slide. When I try to advance, the LOCK IMAGE appears.

  1. How do I advance the the "next slide?
  2. Does LOCK player setting prevent ALL user advance controls? Do I need to change the entire course to AUTO advance?

Hi Tom,

I think the Restricted option, instead of Locked might actually be a better choice for you. This would ensure that learners view the content before they move on. It would also allow them to go back, but only to content they've already seen/finished.

When course navigation is Restricted in Articulate Presenter '13, learners won't be able to advance past an embedded interaction until it's complete. An interaction is considered complete when learners reach the last step of the interaction.

  • Free: This lets learners click slide titles in the menu to navigate to any part of the course at any time. They can view slides in any order.
  • Locked: This means learners can only view slides in the order you've designed. They can't use the menu to jump ahead or skip over slides, nor can they use it to go back to any previously viewed slides.

Let me know if you have any other trouble with this, or any questions.

Best,

Christine

Hi Orla!

Sounds like your navigation is locked.

  • Locked: This means learners can only view slides in the order you've designed. They can't use the menu to jump ahead or skip over slides, nor can they use it to go back to any previously viewed slides.

You can read more about that in this tutorial.

You would need to wait until your slide timeline completes to move forward.

If this does not assist, feel free to share your Articulate Package with us to take a look.

Unfortunately, no that doesn't provide much help because I have it set at restricted already. Under slide properties, if I want to be able to move backward but not forward without watching material, what should the navigation be set at? free or locked? Is there anywhere else for these types of settings?

Hi, Karen -- Thanks for your reply, and if you already have your Player settings for menu options set as RESTRICTED, and neither FREE or LOCKED for your Navigation in Slide Properties is allowing you to freely revisit slide that have already been viewed, we may need to take a closer look at your file to determine the root of the issue. Please use the steps here to create an Articulate Package, and then send it along to our Support Engineers here for additional investigation.

Hi Karen,

If you want users to just be able to move backwards, choose restricted in the menu navigation and then leave the slide settings as "Free". If you set any slides to locked, it means learners can't advance by clicking the player controls or the slide titles in the menu. To navigate away from a locked slide, you'll need to provide one or more hyperlinks that jump to other slides in the course, or set the Advance property to Automatically. You can read more about this here.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for contacting us to share that you are experiencing a navigation restriction in your project as well.

In Presenter 360, you have a couple of options for navigation restrictions. Without seeing your project, I'm not sure which one is the culprit for you, but I'll link to both so that you can dig in.

If you decide that you'd rather me take a look, then with your permission, please share your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.
