PPT Slide Transitions and Articulate

May 19, 2011

Hey guys-

I just tried to include ppt slide transitions to a course and they didn't show up once it was published. I have seen other Presenter videos that included transitions so I'm trying to figure it out. Does this feature not work with Articulate? Is there another option that you know of?

Thank you!

Hi Natalia - slide transition effects aren't supported in Presenter. If you've seen sample courses where transitions seem to be working, it's likely a trick that some developers use to simulate a transition... you can apply a Fade animation to all objects on a slide, and cause it to happen at the very start of the slide, with the start set to "With previous." This causes it to initiate as soon as the learner reaches the slide, so it does look kind of like a slide transition.

Another trick is to add a white or black box over everything on the slide, and have it Fade Out as the very first animation of the slide. The only problem with that approach is that if you've displayed thumbnails in the sidebar of your course, the thumbnails will appear with the white or black box obscuring everything else on the thumbnail.

Does anyone know if slide transitions will be supported in the future release of Articulate or if Articulate will have its own transitions?  Push is good for panning/look left/right effects and I haven't found a substitution for that; zoom also helps for seamless interactivity with smaller objects.

Anyone have work-arounds for these?  Fade will only take you so far...

Erin- I have a couple work-arounds I do for transitions that I learned from this thread and others. I made a screenr but havent' been able to get it to publish :P

One I use a lot is a fade to/from black. I don't use it between every slide. Instead I use it more as a subtle visual cue that I'm changing gears (i.e. going in to a knowledge check)

FADE TO/FROM BLACK

1. Make a black square the size of the slide

2. Set as last animation - Fade in on click

3. Use the same black square on the next slide but Fade Out with previous

I also use ZOOM for smaller objects. I create a lot of software training so I  want to begin with the full screen so the user knows the context of what I'm talking about. Often times I'll start full screen, use a call out (arrow, etc) to point out what section I'm referencing, then I'll "zoom" on that area. There's more than one way to do it, but an easy one is to

1. duplicate the full screenshot

2. crop the copy to just the small area

3. resize to make the cropped area much larger

4. I like to add a large shadow to make it "pop forward" significantly

5. Place over the small version and add fade/zoom animation. This give the appearance of that one piece zooming in

SLIDE PUSH

The trick to this one is working outside of the slide space

1. Whatever slide you want to "push in", group together (I save as a png)

2. Place it off of the slide on which ever side you want it to come in from

3. I typically save the whole thing (both slides) as one side-by-side picture, tho you may be able to just group it

4. Animate with a motion path or fly in

This creates the illusion of one slide coming in and "pushing" the other out of the way

I hope this is helpful. I sure wish I could get that screenr up...
