Presenter & Engage '13: Forward Button to next SLIDE not INTERACT

Jan 09, 2014

I've come to realize a severe limitation from '09 to '13: the ability to have the FORWARD button on an ENGAGE slide (in Presenter) move to the actual next SLIDE. Currently if forces a learner to go through EACH ENGAGE INTERACTION until it gets to the last one and THAT one goes to the next slide.

I've already submitted a Feature Request but in the interim I'm trying to think of a good "hack." I tried this one from Dave Moxon but it's from '09 and now you get a hard-stop in Engage '13 saying "this isn't a valid URL. Try again." Boooo.  (http://daveperso.mediaenglishonline.com/2009/01/27/how-to-link-from-engage-to-presenter/)

Anyone have a creative solution? I REALLY REALLY REALLY think this change is a gross omission when the software was "upgraded" ... if I wasn't so far into the migration to '13 for this very important client WBT I'd probably go back to '09 ... I feel this is that big of a "hill to die on."

For anyone interested I came up with my own -- pain in the butt but functional -- work around:

Instead of Engage I re-created the "look and feel" of the Engage Tab Interaction in PowerPoint: my 9 tabs on the side, my intro slide with my SWF narrator visible, etc. Then just created hyperlinks on each button to a new slide that looks darn close to the Intro but with the info that would have been on the Tab Interaction. For the nine new slides each Forward button will branch to the same place (a "home page") so learner won't know they are on various slides.

WAY too much work to get what I want but at least when the learner hits the FORWARD button it does like it's supposed to do!

Hi Steve,

I'm sorry to hear about the frustration and additional work you had to put in with this.

I am, however, happy to hear that you were able to get this working using a recreation of the interaction in PowerPoint - that was pretty clever. Thank you for sharing your feedback and tips.

I'm not sure if you have already sent this information to our development team. If you haven't you can send it to them through this form

Also, for any other community members that would like to see this type of functionality, I suggest following Steve's lead by submitting a request.

I'd be interested in hearing about additional alternatives or suggestions as well.

Thanks again!

Hey everyone!

With the release of Update 3 for Articulate Studio '13, you can now control how the Prev and Next buttons behave for Articulate Engage interactions embedded in Articulate Presenter courses. The navigation buttons can either jump to the previous/next step in the interaction or the previous/next slide in the overall presentation. See this article for details.
