Presenter vs. Captivate

Feb 20, 2011

Hi there,

Let me start by saying I love the Articulate tools. I want to be able to build with them more often... here's the big BUT...

We use main menus a lot to split up courses into sections allowing learners to choose what order they go in. We have a requirement (from the powers that be) to "force" users to view all of the sections before they're allowed to try the assessment at the end.

In Captivate we can implement a neat little actionscript that marks the topics on the main menu as complete after the learner has viewed all of the slides in that section.

My conundrum is that I can't seem to replicate this in Articulate. I know Articulate doesn't have the scripting and I could use a branching. My problem is that with 6 topics of 6-10 slides each, the course is already pretty big. If I then add branches for each and every possibility for the order learners go through the course... I'll have a CRAZY number of slides.

Does anyone have suggestions on how I can use Articulate, continue to allow learners to choose their path but require each section to be completed before moving on??

Thanks!

Hi Leah-

One approach you could take to allow users to "unlock" the various sections in order would be this (it talks about Articulate Online, but you could use the same approach outside AO):

Simulating course sequencing in Articulate Online

You could even build a simple HTML launch page that launches each course in order, and users could not advance to the next module until they enter the code, provided at the end of the previous module (as discussed in the screencast).

Here are a couple other approaches you might want to use in conjunction with the above, if you prefer to avoid an HTML launch page:

Create A Menu For Multiple Presentations

Use the Presenter SDK to Navigate Between Multiple Courses

Hope this helps with some ideas!

(By the way, on the general topic of Articulate vs. Captivate, there's another thread on that.)
