Question about publishing presentation to web

May 23, 2011

Hey everyone.  My company and I are finally working on publishing the presentation/video to the internet.  We have to go through an internet company that we've already been using for a few years.  What they're wanting to do is to upload the player onto their website like they've done with their basic default player.  Then, the user would just have to select the video they'd want to play and the player would connect to that video and play it.

Is this possible?  I hope I'm explaining it well.  They also said that if they put the player on their website, in the future, our company would simply have to upload the MP4s to a specific spot and the player could go to those MP4s and play them.  Would this work or do we need to package and send the player to them each and every time we want to upload a video?  There will be numerous videos/presentations in the future that we'd need to use this player for.  So can we simply have them publish the player and we only upload the MP4s themselves to the site?  I really hope this makes sense.

I have menu features in the presentation.  Would those still work?

I would suggest taking a look at the following tutorials:

A presentation is a self contained unit. In other words, you can't swap stuff in and out like you are describing. Each presentation needs to reside in its own folder on a web server.

You can publish different presentations using the same player template so that shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you, Justin.  I wasn't sure about that.  That link was very helpful.  The web company was saying that they wanted to just upload the player to their website and then be able to just upload the MP4s for each different presentation, having the singular player play those MP4s.  You're saying you can't do that, right?  On the links provided as resources for that site you gave me, it sounded like I'd have to package everything each time I want to publish another presentation.  So, the the player would have to be packaged and uploaded to the site each time, right?  I know that's using quite a bit of memory rather than simply being able to upload the player once and then having the player be able to call each different MP4 in a separate folder.  But that's the only option, right?

Ah ok.  I understand.  Thanks for explaining Justin!  I think the web company just thought that the player was an individual player like a Flash player application or their own player that plays swf or flv files.  I wasn't quite sure about the difference, either, but I was pretty sure that you couldn't just use one player and have it call to and play different MP4s/swfs/flvs.  The Articulate Player isn't a stand alone player.  It's just built into the files that are created when the presentation is published.

Thank you so much Justin!
