Quiz freezing on submit results

Jul 22, 2013

Hello,

We have a problem with a module that the client has uploaded to their LMS (SCORM). The module has a quiz at the end and after completing it, the user is sent to the results screen. However, quite often the module will freeze up before reaching the results screen. (ie. After pressing "View Results") The problem however is intermittent as it sometimes submits successfully.

Some details regarding the issue below:

Operating system: Varies, but either XP / W7.

Internet browser: Internet Explorer 7/8

LMS versions: Totara 2.2.19 - Moodle 2.2.9

We have uploaded the module to SCORM cloud to test and couldn't replicate the issue our end. So might there be something the client has done their end to have caused the issue, or are there any troubleshooting advice someone could recommend? Many thanks for any help you could provide.

Good Morning, Jamie.

Testing your content on SCORM Cloud was a great idea, and your results likely point to an LMS-specific issue of some kind.  This article outlines common issues pertaining to viewing and tracking content in an LMS.

If the issue persists, open a support case with your LMS provider, since they're your primary source of support for LMS issues.

Hi Justin/Jamie,

I am testing my quiz on my home PC (Win8.1, 32GB RAM, Fast CPU and 4GB Video Card) and I am experiencing the same Quiz freezing issue.  I have published to CD (but with the content on my local C:\ drive).  Most times the questions transit from one to the other seamlessly but at random a question will now and then freeze once the submit button is pressed.  The only option seems to be to exit the course and reload it and accept the option to resume where you left off.  The quiz then proceeds and can either complete successfully or freeze again at random.  I don't think this is an LMS issue since I have not loaded it onto a LMS.  I will upload to SCORM cloud and test there to see if I can replicate the issue in that environment.  Not sure if this happened prior to my Win8.1 update since I didn't test it prior to upgrading, wonder if it could be that?  Possibly not given Jamie's OS types.

Hi Justin

Some good news to report:  On testing the quiz slides further I compared them to a basic project I had created a few weeks ago.  The basic project did not contain any images on the quiz slides and did not ever experience the freezing issue.  So I removed the image from my current project (a single image of one of the default characters provided in the Storyline installation) and the quiz has not frozen again since.  I'm not technical enough to know why that might be but it has solved the issue.

Some bad news: Seems I can't include an image in my quiz.  Can't send my project to you I'm afraid since it is covered by government confidentiality policies.

Hope this is of some use to you though.

Joe

Hello again, Joe.

While I'm glad to hear that you found a workaround, images on quiz slides should never cause this behavior.  It could be that your upgrade to Windows 8.1 (and the accompanying Internet Explorer 11) could be a factor, since we use IE in the background when playing back CD output.  We are already seeing some unrelated issues with IE 11.  As a test, you could send your CD output to a colleague who is not yet running Windows 8.1 to see if they can reproduce the problem.

If you have a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), we are generally willing to sign those if it will help to solve your problem--just upload a copy when you submit your Support Case, and we can provide you with a link to upload your file once we've sent you the signed copy.  Another possibility is that you could strip out any sensitive data and leave only the content that seems to be problematic before uploading it via the links above.

Good luck with your project!

I am having the exact same issue and I am using IE 11. The LMS freezes on the quiz type - such as the matching drop-down, so there seems to be a correlation on the type of quiz question - as the other question types work fine.

I get a running long script error and then the LMS course browser windows closes and then gives me a "unexpected error" message.

I am running it on an actual LMS - that is widely used. SumTotal.

Whats even weirder is that it seems to be isolated to the quiz question type. Other quiz questions function fine - its the matching drop-down that freezes the browser. And all of our flash and browsers are updated far beyond the minimum requirements. I have cleared my cache and allowed ActiveX to run as well as managed the Adobe global security panel settings - still get the freeze.

Thanks

Hello, having the same issue on Moodle with Quizmaker 13 output. Requested help from Articulate but the only answer is that they tested on Scorm Cloud and it works there and so I should open a support case with your LMS provider. But I don't have a webmaster/developer for Moodle. Anyone has a solution or that we can hire to help us fix this ASAP?

Thanks!

Julien

Made some more tests... I have pictures in the background of the slide master, result master and feedback master. Without the images it works fine. If I cut the quiz from 20 questions to something shorter, like 4 questions, then the result slides comes up pretty well/quickly... Which seems something reported further up in this thread.

With the "heavier"  quizzes, once the last question is answered, the quiz seems to freeze (on the result slide for the question) for about 10-20 seconds. Then, often, it goes back to the last question... nothing happens if you click on submit... but if you use the "question list" to go back a few questions and hit next to get to the last question, then the quiz result slide comes up...

Hey Julien,

We've got a number of Moodle users here in the ELH Community forums, so hopefully they're able to pop in here and offer you some additional ideas.  When the issue isn't able to be replicated in another LMS standard such as SCORM Cloud it tends to point to something that needs resolving in the specific LMS, which is why our team would direct you to the LMS provider - perhaps there is a general Moodle support page where you can reach out for help?

Hi Julien,

By a freeze do you mean the user is locked on that particular quiz slide or does it shut the course down? What happens if they user tries to resume the quiz by closing out the browser window and clicking to access the course again from within the Moodle LMS?  Was there any help within the Moodle experts on their site?

Have you tried it in other browsers as well to confirm it's not just a specific browser incompatibility? You can see the browsers that are supported for Storyline here, and then you'll want to confirm if Moodle has specific browsers that they need to use as well.

The freeze happens with Chrome, I.E, Firefox and Safari.

I do not have a moodle expert to help me. I posted on Moodle’s forum with no luck.

I have made a quick video of what happens. See attached. I really hope you can help.

Quizzes made with Articulate 09 with the exact same settings do NOT freeze. Only those done on Quizmaker 13…

I really hope someone can help.

Thanks,

Julien
