Record Narration Window won't open

Jan 29, 2014

Hello,

I just upgraded to Articulate '13 and the installation seems to be working fine on my desktop, but when I went to record a narration on the version I installed on my laptop, the narration window won't open.  It appears to do something when I click on it.  A progress bar appears briefly and a circular symbol showing it's doing something appears for a bit, then stops.  I've tried closing powerpoint and reopening.  I've tried rebooting... no luck. Any thoughts?

PS - I'm running the same version of Power Point (2010) on my desktop and my laptop.  I'm also running the same version of Windows (7).

Hi Leslie,

It's not so much that I can't "record" - I can't even get to the WINDOW to record.

I did look at the article and the presentation IS on the c:\drive; I CAN record using PowerPoint.

It's not just one presentation.  I tried another existing one, and then I tried opening a brand new PowerPoint and clicking on the Record Narration button... but same issue...

Hi Leslie,

This solution worked.  Thanks!

Now today I have another problem... I've opened an existing e-learning module in Articulate '13 and it has deleted my narration!  I first thought maybe I did something wrong, but went back to my backup (not the generated back up - that one had no narration either) but one I had saved myself.  But the same thing happened... It's late in the day and I'm really frustrated, so I'll put up a new post tomorrow on this one... :-(

Hi Leslie,

I worked out my issue with the narration.  I was copying only the powerpoint and ppta files to a new directory (I was updating the module) and for some reason it didn't like that.  So when I made full copy of ALL the files it didn't delete the narration.

HOWEVER, now I have a similar issue to my original one with my laptop, this time with my desk top.  It was working fine.  But just as I was saving a  narration it froze.  I had to Alt/Ctrl/Del... and when I went back in, the narration was fine, but what is now happening is when I try to go into the Audio Editor.  It opens for a second and then closes.  I've tried rebooting.  I've tried reinstalling (as per your article above).  I think I'll have to get our IT department involved and uninstall MS Office as per your article.  I'm really surprised with how unstable this upgrade is. I used Studio '09 for years without any issues like this.

Turns out it's not the installation on my desktop, it has corrupted the module somehow.  I am able to open the Audio Editor within other Modules.  I tried working on the module on my laptop and I'm able to open the Audio Editor but it only shows audio for the first 16 slides.  The audio is there for the rest, but you can't see it in the Editor.  The Record Narration window also froze again on me as I was saving.

The only thing I can do at this point I guess, it to get a back up file from before all these problems started and re do my work (and hope for no more freezing in the Narration window when I'm saving - that's when the problems started).

Hi Dayna!

Thanks for continuing to share. I wanted to share this in case it comes in handy for you:

  1. Open a new, blank presentation in PowerPoint.
  2. Go to the Home tab, click the drop-down arrow beside New Slide, and choose Reuse Slides.
  3. In the Reuse Slides panel, click the Browse button and choose Browse File.
  4. Browse to your original PowerPoint file and click Open.
  5. At the bottom of the Reuse Slides panel, mark the box to Keep source formatting.
  6. Right-click the first slide in the Reuse Slides panel and select Insert All Slides.
  7. Save the new presentation and republish.

Note: Articulate resources, such as audio and video, will need to be inserted again into the new presentation. You may need to export the narration from your original presentation, then import it into the new presentation.
