Reusing content in branching scenarios

Aug 24, 2011

Here's the situation. I have a course that is an instructional presentation on how to repair a device. I'm using branching to provide a link to reused content such as "how to open the case".  During a certain process, the user is offered the opportunity to "see how to open the case" or to continue on without seeing that step again.  What I'd like to be able to do is use the same screens for opening the case in each branch that uses it. The problem is that I'm not sure how to create a relative exit button from that branch.  In one situation the user may exit the course at slide 5 to watch the open the case the branch and I want them to return at slide 6. In another instance, the user might branch out at slide 20 and needs to come back in at 21. My question is there a way to use the content in different places and either return the viewer to his jumping off point into the branch. I'm sort of thinking along the lines of the branch being a window above the main content and having a "close" button to rejoin the main path.  Is that possible?  Or is there another way to do it and I'm just not thinking of it?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Robert

This is the time to get out the pen and paper and map it out!

You may be best getting the content to launch in a new window, which I believe is the default behaviour or by using a different presentation for each one.

AS I understand it you have an exit at slide 5 and then want to return to slide 6 (This is possible because you can link into a specific slide by adding this to the end of your link ?slide=[slide #] )

But on another occasion you may want to link back into a different slide

You could achieve this by having to "how to open the case" presentation one with a link back to slide 6 and another with a link back to slide 21

Or you could incoporate them all into one presentation and actually have the "how to open the case" presentation in you current presentation (you may need it more than once) and then on paper sort out the branching.  If you want to try this look at Kevin Thorns Turfgrass example

Sorry my Brain works faster than my ability to type.

Kevins presentation is here http://www.articulate.com/community/showcase/?page_id=197 Kevin is an active member of these forums so if you have any questions I am sure he can help

My first example was to just open your other presentation in a new window, so when they close that they will go back to the previous window at the point they left.

The second example was to have multiple external versions of the "how to open the case" presentation with links at the end back into the original presentation by using  ?slide=[slide #] at the end of the link you can link back to slide 6 or 21 depending on which version of "how to open the case" they link to.

Sorry no examples of either of these, just thought them through based on your example
