I will have a backup copy of course, but my copy will be out of date. The new PPT that I will receive in Japanese will have all the corrections to the text applied (God knows where, as I don't speak JP) so I won't be able to use my 'backup' anymore.
Slides, animations, etc... won't change. Only the content text will be tweaked.
Provided you replace the original PowerPoint file with the one that was modified, you should be fine. Just don't change the file name or location. I would definitely recommend making a backup of the original just in case you have an issue. Here's how:

I would defintiely do a "save as" so you have a backup copy just in case...
