Saving user data

Apr 23, 2012

When reviewing records of how users viewed the presentations (if they didn't view all the content and just went to the quiz/test) we are able to solve a lot of user problems and resolve test failures - they didn't watch the full presentation.

However, this creates a lot of data - is there a way to archive all this information so a year or two of it can be retained and not be taking up space on the server?

I am new to all this and hope there is a way to keep all this detail somehow with out having it taking up space on the primary system.  Thanks!

Hi Paul and welcome to E-learning Heroes!

Which data is it you want to archive? The learner's data (course scores, progress) or the actual Articulate Studio presentation files?

If you're looking to archive the actual learner data, can you tell us what your LMS is and how you're currently tracking learner data? Seems that would be more specific to your LMS, but I'd like to hear more about what you're using and what specifically you're hoping to do.

Thanks!

To be more clear….

We are saving the Articulate Studio files on a Computer Hard Drive and doing a full back up of that to another drive.  Our LMS is a home-brew application and captures the basic information on pass/fail, who took what, etc.  so we’ve got that information.  The actual training files are zipped up and loaded to the LMS for use with the development files and supporting information used to develop the course is stored on the desktop PC hard drives.  What the technology folks want is to find a way to capture progress information (time spent, slide skipped, etc.) as the actual scores are in the LMS tool.  I am new to Articulate and not a computer/data base expert but figure there has to be someone who has figured out a way to ‘keep’ the information generated without using server space or filling up a simple LMS data base.

The LMS information is kept for a year on-line and is pulled off (key data archived on a server & PC drive for reference) and only the current year is available in the application.

The current information files – time spent in the course, slides viewed/skipped, etc. –  add up to about 120 GB and we’re estimating that 18 months of data would add up to just less than 200 GB of information.  Has anyone developed a protocol  or process/procedure for saving this information?  At this point, I am thinking I will recommend the purchase of a 2-3 TB external drive and have the data and a full back up of the program information stored on that. That would mean doing manual look-up of information in our office but, that is what usually happens with old data anyway.   So, please tell me how crazy I may be and what I am not thinking to ask about – As you know, “Mr. Murphy” will be involved and I really need to find a way to keep this data without eating up space on the server.  Thanks from a new guy…
