Security Restrictions with FLV Files - How to Avoid?

Sep 20, 2012

Hi all,

I've a question on security restrictions I'd very much welcome some advice on. Basically, I'd like to try to avoid an issue I've experienced where FLV videos do not display within the course when content is published locally on my laptop.  All of the rest of the content appears to publish fine but I'm seeing a blank slide (with the message "paused" in the seekbar area) where I would expect the video to play.

From looking at this article (http://www.articulate.com/support/kb_article.php?product=ap9&id=u5lzv71un2p4) I can see that the recommended approach is to upload the content to a web server and view it using a http address. However, it would be great if I (and other people in my organization) could test the content locally before uploading to a web server, if that's possible?

Any advice you can provide on Flash-related security restrictions (and how to avoid!) would be appreciated.
Many Thanks,
Clare

Hi Clare and welcome to the forum.

Have you looked at hosting your FLVs via the likes of Brightcove, Vimeo et al?  Not every media host accepts FLVs but you can always use something like Format Factory to convert to MP4 or whatever is required.  I only mention the likes of BC and Vimeo because their streaming, stability,  support and level of customisation is excellent.  Sure, this may not be a resolution to your localised quandry, but if you want control over how your videos appear 'in course' (as web objects) when live then they're worthy of consideration.

Hi Simon,

That's a very good point - I have used Vimeo (and find it excellent) but Brightcove is definitely worth investigation also for hosting of FLVs. Thanks so much for the tip - much appreciated! I'm not sure if there is a simple solution to my local quandary (we might just have to post the existing content to the servers to fully review) but it's great to pick up some useful info for next time along the way.

Cheerio,

Clare
