Slides with videos don't play in uploaded presentation

Dec 19, 2011

I'm a website developer, and I'm working with a client who has created a number of presentations in Articulate, to be uploaded to their site and viewed online. I followed the instructions to upload a presentation using Filezilla in binary mode, but when I view the presentation, the slides that contain videos just come up blank. I see them in the list of slides and in the thumbnail view, but when I try to advance to one using the Next button or by clicking the thumbnail, the player just goes blank, with no error message and no way to do anything but view the other slides.

Here's the presentation:

Slides 10 and 20 are the ones with the issue.

Unfortunately, I don't have the Articulate software myself and have never used it, but if you can point me in the right direction so I can help my client troubleshoot, I'd appreciate it very much!

Thanks -

Anne

Hi Anne, welcome to Heroes!

If the included FLV or MP4 videos in your client's Presenter ’09 presentation do not play in the published output, you may need to do one or more of the following:

Upgrade Adobe Flash Player

You may need to upgrade Adobe Flash Player on your computer to a version that supports FLV and MP4 content.  Adobe Flash Player supports these movie formats in the following versions:

  • FLV is supported in Adobe Flash Player 7 and higher.
  • MP4 is supported in Adobe Flash Player 9 Update 3 and higher.

The recommended solution is to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.

Ensure that the published title and file path do not contain special characters

Special characters in the published title of your presentation can prevent movies from playing.  See Publishing > The published title should not include special characters.

Also, be sure that the file path to your published presentation does not include special characters.  You should use only:

  • Letters of the English alphabet (A-Z)
  • Numbers
  • Hyphens (-)
  • Underscores (_)

Add FLV and MP4 MIME types to your server

If your FLV or MP4 movies still do not play after uploading your published presentation to a server, see also:

Multimedia > FLV movies require FLV MIME type on server to play properly

Multimedia > MP4 movies require MP4 MIME type on server to play properly

Let us know if that's helpful, or if we can help further troubleshoot. Happy holidays!

Peter,

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I'm running Flash Player 10.3; the file path doesn't have any special characters at all (http://humanealliance.org/staging/articulate/PhoneManagementComplete/player.html); and I've added the FLV and MP4 MIME types to the server as instructed, but the videos still won't play.

I'm not sure what format the videos are in, but I notice something when looking at the files in the package: in the path /data/swf/ , there are files called slide1.swf through slide9.swf, and slide11.swf through slide19.swf, but there are no files for slides 10 and 20, which are the ones with the videos. Could that be part of the problem, or is that normal when a slide contains a video?

Thanks again -

Anne
