The web host of our LMS is concerned Articulate scorm packages are making courses nearly 95 MB in size.
I often use YouTube,Vimeo and Soundcloud.com to stream video and audio. Is it possible to stream Articulate presenter/packages in the same way to our LMS?
I see that Articulate online might be an option but we have a VERY tight budget
In order to optimize delivery - especially via low-bandwidth connections -- Articulate products generate individual .swf files that are launched in the Articulate player (player shell) via a player.html file. The Articulate player only preloads 3 slides in advance. Thus, the entire presentation (95MB) won't be downloaded at the start of the presentation.
To improve the download time for your courses, you may need to adjust the overall Quality at which you publish your presentations. Here's how:
Thanks to your suggestion Optimise/Compress the project before publishing. The 8 Articulate modules (SCORM) in the Moodle course now equates to a total of 20MB (zipped).
FYI, I have found if an Articulate project (LMS) has attachments the attachments will throw an error once uploaded into Moodle versions 1.9 and 2.1 if Custom (Advanced) is selected. Thankfully, Optimised for Web or CD will show all attachments just fine in Moolde.
Our LMS host is very keen to keep all our Moodle courses small. In his opinion a course should be less than 5MB including all content.
I think his motivation/desire is NOT to use any third party rapid eLearning tools and keep all the content created by/with Moodle's resources/Activities
BECAUSE, engaging content and NOT information dumps are important to me I'll continue to employ Articulated .
Brian, a further question please. As you said in your recent response articulate only loads three slides in advance. With that in mind, what would be the maximum total of the slides to be hyperthetically? For example one, slide is engage and the other two text based only.
Keeping the file size down is good for at least a couple of reasons:
1 - lowers the amount of disk space you use on your server (I wonder if this is the primary motivation of your ISP)
2 - makes it faster for your users to download/view
This is even more important if your content is being used by people on dial-up or limited connectivity sites - but if the majority of your Moodle usage is from within your organisation, file size becomes less of an issue.
of course this isn't always practical and if you have large amounts of rich media/video that you want to keep restricted (eg not on youtube etc) then there are a bunch of ways to do this efficiently without storing the file in Moodle...
We have a lot of clients who would find a 5MB course very small - keeping a "Moodle Course" to an arbitrary size like this seems a bit strange to me. - so if your host is unable to provide support for larger Moodle courses - feel free to drop me a line - we have a very strong AU office and can provide a range of services including hosting/development/support.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I really appreciate the information you have put forward.
I have a follow up question for you but put that to you in the next days.
Again - THANK YOU
Nic
Hi Nicole 95mb is large, do you have video in those slides? IF yes you can use a streaming player for the video see here

Hi Phil,
