Updating from Studio 09 to 13

Apr 25, 2016

I (and others) created courses in Studio 09 several years ago and now I am going to make edits. I now have Studio 13. Can I still open PowerPoint and preview the engage activities without having to update each interaction to 13? When I tried this my screen froze and did nothing. I read in the forum that I need to update all the engage activities to 13, but I just want to preview the content so I can make recommendations for changes to the content, not actually make the changes (at least yet). Can I just preview without updating all the activities?

Hi Barbara,

If you've already updated to Studio '13, you can't have Studio 09 installed on the same system - so when you go to open the files they'll all update. Were they Community interactions from Engage?

If so, when upgrading to Studio '13, we convert community interactions into Process interactions to preserve your data. You might want to check out the new interaction types in Engage '13 to see if they'll work for you.

If you upgrade an Articulate Presenter '09 course that includes a community interaction to Presenter '13, you'll see the following warning:

"Community interactions are no longer supported in Articulate Presenter '13. Would you like to convert the interaction to a Process interaction?"

If you'd like to edit and publish the interaction with Studio '13, click Yes to convert it to a Process interaction. If you'd like to keep the community interaction as it is, click No, then open the original project on a computer where Studio '09 is installed.

That makes sense. But when I open the old version filename.pptx (and it has an associated ppta and intr file) in Presenter/PowerPoint, and then click on the interaction slide or try to preview the slide, the ppt just freezes.   I do not get a notice to upgrade anything.  Do I have to update all the interactions in Engage? I thought I would get a notice in Powerpoint.

Hi Barbara,

You should be able to update the entire presentation at once, but I'm curious if you've tried to remove that particular Engage slide - does the Presentation preview successfully then? You could try inserting it again if you have the .intr file handy. Also, you'll want to confirm that you're working on local project files as detailed here. If you'd like to share a copy of the Presenter package here with us I'm also happy to take a look. For details, see How to Create an Articulate Package.
