Using External Videos in Presenter from Studio '13

Oct 24, 2018

I cannot find the answer on this in documentation.

I am putting together a class in Studio '13, that includes several videos. Some of the videos are from YouTube, and Articulate cannot embed them into a slide, but is requiring a new tab be opened and the video to play in the new tab. I will be releasing the course in Restricted Mode, so the user has to complete the entire course without scrubbing ahead.

What will happen with the video in the new tab?

1)I am assuming that the user could skip that content, correct (because it is in new tab)?

2)Will the tab that Articulate is running in remain active (session remain open) so when the user returns,  the course can resume?

3) Is  there anything I should be aware of going in to this?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Loralee,

Are you seeing the error message at the bottom of this article when trying to embed the videos?

Sorry, you've run into trouble there! If you're seeing that and now launching the videos in a new window/tab that won't change anything about how restricted navigation works - as it's based on the learner visiting the slide and being able to advance from there.

The course should remain active unless there is a timeout feature within your LMS based on inactivity. You'll want to check with your LMS admins on that!

Some companies restrict access to sites like YouTube, so you may want to check that your learners will be able to play back the videos if they're not embedded directly into the course.

Thank you for your reply. That was the first error message I received, then I followed the instructions to embed as a Web Object and found the requirement to open in a new tab.

I did package a short test and did notice that the Articulate tab did continue to count time.

Both open a new tab (therefore leaving the training) and requiring YouTube access is a concern as some users are likely to get confused with multiple tabs being open, and not all businesses will have YouTube accessible.  Are there any best practice suggestions in handling this?

We deploy via web and not LMS.

I just followed the instructions in the video (thank you) and was able to embed the YouTube video into a slide, and pass the rel=0 and showinfo=0 parameters. When I packaged the test, it worked.

Does anyone know what happens if YouTube is blocked for the user? (I don't have a way to test this as YouTube is not blocked for us.)

If I have not added any voice over to keep the Articulate slide active and the clock running, can the user just skip forward to the next slide? Does it crash? I am deploying via the web, not an LMS.

Any Best Practices?

Hi Loralee!  I'm glad you're moving forward with your videos!  I'll address those lingering concerns, next.

  • Restricted navigation and web videos:  Videos from files are the only ones that are synced to, and controlled by, the slide's timeline.  Once the timeline on the slide ends (regardless if the web video is still playing), the next button will be enabled for the learners to progress.
  • Restricted YouTube access:  Learners would likely see a message that YouTube content is blocked or restricted.  The timeline would still run as designed, and learners can progress once the timeline ends.

I have an idea for you, Loralee.  One way to extend the timeline of that slide without narration would be to animate an object off stage.  You can delay the animation by as many seconds as you need to cover your web video.  That way, the timeline will run as long as you need, and the learners can't advance until the timeline is ended.
