Video in Articulate vs. YouTube

Nov 09, 2011

Question.  I put the same video in an Articulate Presentation and on YouTube.  Playing the video on the web with it embedded into Articulate, it took a full minute to even begin playing.  The exact same file loaded to YouTube played instantly.  Is YouTube just that much better at streaming video?  This is the biggest hurdle I have right now because a LOT of my training is incorporating video.  I have to use Articulate for tracking purposes in our LMS, but the biggest complaint is the amount of time it takes to actually start.  I'm only talking a 30MB .flv file here.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

Hi Brock,

There's a lot of variables at play here.  First, Youtube converts and encodes the video file in such a way that allows the video to be streamed.  Also, they have an incredible server architecture that also contributes to faster playback.  So, not only is the file type important and the algorithm used to encode the file, but also the server that you're hosting the Articulate content.

Check out the following thread that discusses video playback:

There's a lot of great solutions there.
