Video won't play after published

Aug 13, 2012

I have uploaded a video to a slide - when I preview it I am able to view the video. But after I publish it the video no longer plays. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Heroes, Lindsay!

If FLV or MP4 videos don't display when your Articulate content is hosted on a server, it's likely that the server is not configured to play these files. Please review the following articles for more information:

FLV mime type

MP4 mime type

This article may also offer some solutions for you. Let us know if that helps...

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem. Just a few weeks ago, could convert videos to .flv and publish without any trouble. Now, converted mp4s to .flv, they preview fine, but won't show up at all in published files (that are running on my machine, not on a server). I'm having to conver to .swf to get the videos to publish...and it's hard to control their size/placement as .swf files. Some of them are going rouge after publishing.

I thought perhaps it was the videos or my PPT file...but I went back to some of the projects I was working on a few weeks ago when things worked perfectly....those .flv files won't publish properly now either.

Tried repairing my installation of Articulate. Colleague reinstalled his version but he's having the same issues. Any ideas? Was there an update to windows that is interfering with Presenter or the ribbon?

Hi Peter,

I am having this issue as well. I checked out the article you posted above and noticed I need Adobe Flash installed. I currently have Adobe Flash Player 15 ActiveX installed, would this be the reason why I cannot see videos in the published content? I am publishing the content as a CD format and using the Launch_Player.exe file to view the presentation. I also tried using the player.html file to play the presentation but the same issue happens where the published videos will not play. It looks fine when I preview the presentation in Articulate Storyline 2 but not when it is published.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Amber,

Are you placing the videos in Presenter or Storyline? If they're not playing in your Storyline content or Presenter content when viewing the published versions you'll want to make sure you're testing within the intended environments.  You mention publish to CD - did you review the troubleshooting steps here (this is Storyline) and here in Presenter

This issue happens in Presenter and Storyline for me. I am wondering if having Adobe Flash Player 15 ActiveX is enough. I am currently testing it in the environment it will be distributed on. I looked at the articles you mentioned for troubleshooting and this is why I am asking if the version of Adobe Flash I currently have is suffice.

Thanks

Ashley, just as a reminder.

I published my presentation as a CD format to distribute offline in both Studio and Storyline. I can see the mp4 files in the CD package that I have zipped in my attachments above. The videos play in preview for both Studio and Storyline. Lastly I have checked all of the system requirements and they have been met in the environment I am trying to play the presentations in.

Thanks

Hi Ashley,

I figured out why the videos wouldn't play. For some reason if I store the presentations on the company's file server the videos won't play. If I copy the package onto my C: drive and try to play the presentations the videos work!

Thanks for looking into this with me but now my issue is solved. I will just be sure to distribute the files by email and have users save the presentation to their C: first before playing.

This issue is totally driving me mad.

I can load videos up in any range of formats.  They all play on the preview but not in the output, but do in HTML5.

The files are hosted locally, have the right characters.

I've successfully published other projects with video without any issues.

Any help would be great, to save what remaining hair I have...!

We are having the same problem with mp4 videos showing in preveiw but on on the server. Past courses built in Artiuclate 09 with mp4 videos show up fine on the server so I think the server must support mp4 video.

This new course was built in Artiuclate 13, is it possible that there is something in the newer version that is causing this?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Liz,

Studio '13 did change some elements of publishing and working in the program as a whole, but nothing that I can think of that would stop MP4s from working entirely. Did you check into the items mentioned in this article?  In addition to the server supporting those codec and mime types, there are a few other reasons. If you continue to have difficulty we'll want to take a look at your Presenter package.

It's now 2017 and I'm having this problem. Am desperately trying to get away from Adobe Flash support because it changes every few months. Every student has a different OS/browser combination so Tech Support is HORRENDOUS. So I bought Articulate and am converting to HTML5. Everything is going great with many videos working just fine and others not running at all after publication to scorm or web although they run fine in preview. This is our bread and butter. It HAS to work.  What do I do? I don't have the original PPT files (from 10 years ago before I joint company) but extracted non-working video and converted from FLV to MP4.  It still doesn't work.  What do I do?  Who can help?

Hi.

See below.

I’ve found that if my set of slides has too many or too few, the videos don’t play. (Perhaps it’s the length of time rather than # of slides?)
On one, when I divided a very long PowerPoint presentation into 6 30-slide parts, the video wouldn’t play. When I reworked into just 3 parts, the video worked again.
On the other hand, I had one 36-slide PowerPoint file with an embedded file that the video didn’t publish.

* But, when I broke it into two 18-slide PowerPoint files, it began to play again.

Thanks for any insights. The inconsistencies are perplexing.

Same program (Presenter 360 for our diabetic wound care training, as below) caused me massive rework –

Images in the program were randomly replaced with other pictures from the same program. Only after all the work to publish and load onto the LMS.

E.g., the slides 1-6 might be fine but then slide 7 will contain an image that actually resided on slide 1.
Then 8 – 11 will be fine but one of 3 images on slide 12 will be from slide whatever.

I have a massive program and had to have someone audit all the slides in the LMS against all the PPT files to see what images might have been transposed.

There were at least 30.

The fix – go into the slide in Presenter, save the image that appears to be in the slide to my hard drive (it’s fine in the slide itself; it gets transposed during publishing), then delete from the slide and reload the exact same image back into the slide. Republish and reload onto LMS. Resolves problem.

Took me a long time to figure out how to do it. Would have been an easy problem to completely miss (customers would likely have told me) and is so inconsistent that it’s a huge issue.

I'm having similar issues with a Storyline 360 course.  We are using an older LMS with various computer versions (working towards an upgrade across the organization), but many of our setups are a bit older.  I just asked about the version of IE being used since that tends to be our deferred browser and there is no way around it.

I have videos in a course that we need to show our employees and when I preview it, everything works fine.  When I publish it to Articulate 360 and then have someone review it, the videos play perfectly fine.  Then when I go to link it to our LMS from a network folder that it is stored on, the video loads and the first image appears, but it will not play.   To note, I am using IE11 to test as a user in our LMS.

The only guidance I have been given is that the users cannot use Flash and I'm thinking we are beginning to phase it out with our upgrades coming.  So with that, all video clips are in an mp4 format.  I am still published for the lms as HTML5/Flash just in case some of our computers prefer Flash.

This is a bit urgent and I need to figure out how to get 360 to appear on all our PC's before we move forward with the purchase.  Our trial has about 30 days remaining!
