.wavs and .mp3s - again...
Feb 17, 2011
So...
I decided to be a good boy, and try recording to .wav, and importing the files en masse to my project. I usually create .mp3 files and use those, .wav just seems so....1980's.
Anyway,
All was going well, until I got to Engage.
I imported my first .wav, and got told that the file "...was unsupported or had a nasty bitrate", (or something like that). I do not remember, because I tried it again, and it worked.
Or so it appeared......Engage was playing a trick on me.
When I reviewed the interaction, it sounded as though I had taken a course in stuttering, and passed with honours.
When I converted everything to .mp3, sanity was restored, but my understanding of audio techniques once again slid down the snake of life and now sits on space #1 again.
When I save to .wav, my software says 44100, mono, 128kbps - my usual settings for .mp3.
So am I, once again, to take the "noodge of the day" award, or am I possibly doing something that I am unaware of?
Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce,
Can you tell me what program you're using to convert the files to MP3? I always use iTunes for the conversion.
I just used my recording software, Wavepad, to "Save As" .mp3, like I always did before today.
It's the .wav side of the equation that caused me the issues, as soon as make things .mp3, all OK again....

Anytime I import WAV files into Articulate, I create them with Audacity. So, you might try using Audacity for your WAV files to see if that resolves the issue.
I cannot run Audacity, (for some unknown reason), hence I bought NCH.
Maybe this is just a one-off glitch, I will have to try again and see what happens.

Bruce,
Q. why can't you use Audacity? Do you get some sort of error when running it? I have used Audacity on Widows XP, Vista, and Win 7 with no issues and you can take wav files and convert them to MP3. There is also Audacity for Mac's OS9.
Audacity.
The main reason I do not use wav files is there size and quality. MP3's are far superior in quality and they don't take up as much room. If you need help troubleshooting Audacity let me know.
Bruce, when you use Audacity do you typically publish files as .mp3? I've always used the .wav files in Audacity (Stereo 44.1Khz/16bit). When I went to an Articulate training I believe these were the best settings for audio being imported. If i'm wrong, please correct me.
Thanks Laura, and yes, these are the settings I use.
As I said above, I do not use Audacity. When they did their last upgrade, I suffered all kinds of errors. I wanted to be in a position where I had licensed software, so I changed to NCH Wavepad SOund editor, which I am supremely happy with, (until tonight).
I have the ability to save as .mp3 with that, and think I am now all OK.
Thanks again.
Bruce
Hey Bruce,
Did you ever sort this one out?
Cheers,
Dave
Hey Dave....
All seems to have calmed down now.
I am now recording everything externally into .wav using the settings Laura mentions above, (but mono), and then just pulling into AP09. All seems to be working fine.
Hope you are well. Send me a PM if you want to let me know how things are going.
Bruce
