What does the Search Tab actually search?

Apr 26, 2011

Does anyone know if I include the Search Tab in the Articulate Player what it actually searches? I know it searches slide text and slide notes, but does it search things like:

  • Inserted text boxes on PowerPoint slides--or does it only search text that is entered in text boxes that are on the slide master.
  • Any shape (triangles, circles, etc.,) that has text inserted into it even if it isn't "technically" what Microsoft labels as a text box.
  • Text that is entered into SmartArt
  • Engage activities
  • Quizzes
  • The Navigation titles given in Slide Properties

We're trying to decide if it's something we want to include on our Articulate skin or not.  Thought I'd see if anyone could get me up to speed on this function before we start doing some testing with it.  Appreciate your help!

In my Navigation instructions, I always include something along the lines of .....

"Do you want to look for stuff, well then use the "Search" Tab, but please note, it will not search in the Engage Interactions or Quizzes.

If you WOULD like to search in the Interactions, or the Quizzes, please submit a Feature Request".

OK, I made up the last sentence, but the rest is always there.

Did you change anything in the Player Template/Text Labels?  You have the ability there to customize the text (or delete it so it's blank).  I'd go in there and see if those fields are blank.  Otherwise, there's probably a way to turn those on and off, but I'm not sure where you'd find it and just glancing in the Player Template I didn't see it.  Hope that helps.

Thanks Kristi. I didn't deliberately change any text, but this just occurred after I moved files to clean out the folder and lost my audio. These files were on my C drive, and I kept the published files with the ppta and pptx, but I think things became unlinked and confused. I did find that the text disappeared in those fields as you mention, though I hadn't edited them to my knowledge. So I've added Search In, Search Text and Search Notes as custom text which pulled it back in.

Hey Mike, check out this screencast for a way to include interactions and quizzes in the searchable text: https://player.vimeo.com/video/136615116

If a learner uses this approach, and their search term is in an interaction or quiz, the search window will allow them to jump to the quiz or interaction slide (although it won't actually open the specific quiz question or interaction step where the search text appears).
