Will the next update resolve BOTH image & video over-compressing?

Jan 17, 2014

From what I've read and experienced, the move from Articulate '09 to '13 has caused grief for many users (including myself) when inserting images (especially screenshots) and videos.  Even maximizing the image and video quality settings does not enable crisp images and videos to be viewed in the published presentation.  I was able to fix videos by swapping the post-published versions out with source versions, but images still look pretty bad.  My questions are

A)  Is it anticipated that the next update will resolve BOTH image and video over-compressing?

and

B)  If so, WHEN is the general time frame for the said update to be released?

Hi Steven and welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Overall video quality will be improved in the next software update for Articulate Studio '13, however, there are still some issues that we're investigating. We cannot give an estimate on updates, nor can we guarantee which fixes will be applied to those updates. We would like all fixes to be available as soon as possible and we are working hard to bring these fixes to our customers as quickly as we can.

I'm happy to hear that you were able to improve at least some of the quality for your projects. I apologize for the extra time it took to use that workaround, but hopefully that method has solved the video quality issue for now, temporarily.

As for the image quality question - it looks like you have an active case for this (#00379347 for my reference). I don't see a specific issue tied to this and from what you described it sounds like this mostly happens with "Snagit" screenshots. Is that correct?

I'm curious what format you're using for these images (are they PNG, etc.) and if you've tried other formats. I know that our support engineers are already working with you on this, but I'd like to see if we can find a solution for now, if possible.

Are you able to provide one of the original images and attach it here? Also, if you could provide a screenshot that shows the quality differences (higher quality original vs blurry, lower quality published result) that would help as well.

Thanks!

Steven Sykes

The degradation happens with images captured with SnagIt (or Windows Snipping Tool for that matter) after publication.  Here is a snip of the same area pre- and post- publishing of the same area.  The image settings are set to maximum quality and the capture area was roughly the same.  Even though the post-published image is quite smaller, it still lacks so much resolution that it is blurred to the point where it is hard to read.  Also attached is the image straight from SnagIt saved as a jpeg.  My full presentation (before and after) is attached to my active case.

Good morning Steven,

I hope you had a great weekend!

I just checked the status of your case this morning and I see that Wilbert sent a new message out on the 17th. Looks like he'd like you to try publishing a presentation to see if you experience the same quality issues with the content in that project.

If you can, please let Wilbert know if you see the same thing with that project, so he can continue working with you.

Thanks!

I have confirmed that the image quality issue is due tohaving the ability to save as Lossless removed in Studio '13.  Compare the two images attached.  Both were published with maximum imagequality selected, one in '09 and one in '13. We consider this a significant issue because it renders many imagesunreadable when published (even at the current maximum quality selected in Studio '13).

Is this a known issue (the inability to save as Losslessin Studio '13) and will it be addressed in future updates?

That is the same issue we ran into.  It did not matter what tool was used to grab the snip (Snagit or Snipping Tool) because the image degradation occurred when published.  When published in Studio '13 at the maximum image quality setting many images (esp with text) became blurry.  Images are noticeably clearer when published in Studio '09.  We are now re-evaluating our options for course development.  A patch or update to resolve this issue sure would make life easier!
