Windows 8

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and Articulate keeps locking up.  Is there a way to make Articulate work with Windows 8?

Good morning Steve! Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

First, we'll want to make sure that you have the 32-bit version of Office installed. I'm not sure if any changes (re-installation, etc) took place when you upgraded, but this is the main cause of problems similar to this one.

Here's some additional information on that topic:

Which version of Office 2010 should I install, 32-bit or 64-bit?

To use Articulate Presenter '09 with PowerPoint 2010, you must have the 32-bit version installed.Presenter ‘09 is not supported in the 64-bit version of PowerPoint 2010 (the Articulate menu will be missing).

Microsoft has released 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office.  Microsoft recommends installing a 32-bit version of Office 2010 on BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit supported operating systems.

Microsoft recommends installing a 32-bit version, because existing Office extensions, ActiveX controls (like Flash), third-party add-ins (like Articulate Presenter), in-house solutions built on previous versions of Office, or 32-bit versions of programs that interface with Office will not run in a 64-bit version of Office.

To review the recommendation from Microsoft, please see the following TechNet article from Microsoft.

Click-to-Run

Microsoft has acknowledged that Click-to-Run versions of Office 2010 can interfere with add-ins (such as Articulate Presenter).  Therefore, you should avoid installing a Click-to-Run version of Microsoft Office 2010.  For more information and to determine if you have a Click-to-Run version of Microsoft Office 2010, see General > PPTA file does not get created when using PowerPoint 2010 and prompted to upgrade presentation.

If you've confirmed that you're using the 32 bit installation of Office, you may want to check out this knowledge base article. While I'm aware Windows 8 isn't listed here, it still provides some troubleshooting steps that may resolve the stability issue.

You'll need administrative privileges to install software properly.  You may need to ask your IT staff for assistance if you do not have the necessary security permissions.

  1. If User Account Control (UAC) is enabled on your computer, temporarily disable it while performing the following repair steps, and reboot your computer when prompted.
  2. Navigate to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, and uninstall Articulate Studio ’09.
  3. Also in the Programs and Features window, uninstall Microsoft Office.
  4. Reboot your computer.
  5. Download and extract this zip file on your computer.
  6. Right-click the PRE.bat file, and select Run as Administrator. (This file will delete the Articulate registry keys and prepare the computer for a clean re-installation. It should only take a few seconds to complete.)
  7. Reinstall Microsoft Office.
  8. Reinstall Articulate Studio ’09 by right-clicking the installer file and selecting Run as Administrator. (You can download the latest installer here.)
  9. From the zip file downloaded in step 5, right-click the POST.bat file, and select Run as Administrator. (This file will restore any custom templates, color schemes, logos, playlists, and presenter bios you may have previously created. It should only take a few seconds to complete.)

If you're still experiencing unexpected behavior after performing the steps above, it may indicate an issue with the Microsoft .NET Framework or the Adobe Flash Player, both of which are required for Articulate Studio ’09. Please do the following:

  1. Ensure that Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 is enabled. Here’s how:
    1. Navigate to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    2. Select the link from the left navigation pane to Turn Windows features on or off.
    3. Ensure that the check box for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 is selected, and click the OKbutton.
  2. Using Internet Explorer, uninstall Adobe Flash Player as described in this Adobe article.
  3. Using Internet Explorer, install a fresh copy of Adobe Flash Player.

If you've gone through the steps above and still experience problems with lock ups in the software, please let us know!

Thanks!

Have a great day,

Christine
