Any way to track clicks on the module itself?

Feb 24, 2018

A client has some modules that were apparently created in Articulate.  They are embedded into their web page.  They are asking if there is a way to track when a user clicks anywhere to continue and advance the slides within the modules.  They want to be able to track back, forward and/or click to continue.  I have never used this product and am trying to do research for them.  Attached a screen shot of what I am talking about.

Hi Kate,

That would be the perfect job for xAPI. xAPI is a somewhat-new standard for tracking activities (you're probably familiar with SCORM, which is another standard). Whereas SCORM can only track learners completing or not completing a course, xAPI can track many things.

You would have to set up a Learning Record Store (LRS) to contain this data and then create triggers in Storyline to execute Javascript and send statements to the LRS. This article goes over xAPI at a high level, and this tutorial gives you a better idea of the work involved.

Did the client say why they want to track all of this? As you can tell from the tutorials, it's not a super quick process to edit the source files to send statements, so you'd really want to make sure it's worth it. I'm not trying to dissuade you because xAPI is definitely the future of eLearning, but I want you to be aware of the time involved.

Cheers,

Allison
