I wanted to have a blank slide as a quiz intro, and the timer to kick in only once the user is actually in the quiz questions. Just couldn't get it to work. :-(

I saw you also posted over here too, and wanted to confirm which version of Quizmaker you're using? In Quizmaker the timer will be throughout the entire quiz, so perhaps you'd want to include the blank slide as a part of a Presenter course and import your Quizmaker into that file?

The quiz timer within Quizmaker does start at the beginning.
Perhaps adding your quiz to a Presenter project would allow you to have the content slides needed prior to the timer starting on the actual quiz.
