LMS only remembering score form first attempt

Oct 19, 2011

HI,

It seems we have an issue with users and multiple attempts of a quiz. When a user takes the quiz and then retakes the quiz, only the first score is remembered by the LMS (Articulate online).

The quiz is being delivered through a Presenter slideshow. The quiz properties are set to allow for 3 attempts.

I have read some other peoples solutions to this issue but their solutions are not always appropriate. I have to be able to make it that a user can only retry the quiz three times (so can't set it to unlimited like one user suggested).

I have read that I should make them exit the presentation then the retake the quiz, but I am unsure how to do this without it effecting my 3 attempt limit.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Karina

Hello Karina,

it's quite normal for every LMS to track just one score for each scorm session, that is why you cannot store multiple quiz results without exiting and reentering the scorm package...

Any particular reason for letting users retake a quiz and store the score again?

The three times option is generally used to allow users retake a quiz when they fail... is that the case?

Hi,

i think I wasn't clear enuogh (sorry), I only need the program to remember the last score (i.e. the score the user received on their last attempt). So in answer to your last question, they should only retake the quiz if they fail.

Whats happening now is that it is only remembering the score of their first attempt, so if someone fails their first attempt at the quiz but then passess on their next attempt, it still only shows the score for the first (failed) attempt.

thanks!

Ok, I see..

unfortunately your experience may reveal a well-known scorm session limit... sometimes, though Quizmaker has the cool Retry Quiz option inside itself, this cannot update the score...

in my LMS (Moodle), I only realized this quite late: sometimes, when the LMS is not overloaded, the retry option works perfectly, and the FINISH button stores the last score; sometimes, it doesn't....

For some critical courses I preferred to disable the Retry option, and warn users to click finish and then exit and then retake the test...

If Articulate online is supposed to handle this without problem, submit a support request here

I'm sorry, I can't see other options... other than having a quiz developed in flash with specific hard code to manage scorm timeouts when closing and reopening the scorm session...

Anyway, remember:

The finish button stores the score for sure.. (no way to close your browser or exiting without clicking on the finish button, you 'll lose the tracking...

Give it a further try... try to avoid Flash cookies when publishing for LMS, and do not allow resume option in your quiz, I suggest.

Hope it helps

Hi Karina and welcome to Heroes! When you published your presentation what are the settings you used under Reporting -> LMS Reporting? I would recommend using Passed/Incomplete. Your LMS should interpret an incomplete differently from a Failed. a Failed status should move a course to the transcript and typically this means that the course will be in review mode moving forward which means any attempt will not be counted. If you set the status to Incomplete, that means that a failed quiz should only be interpreted as an incomplete and allow the user to retake the quiz until they pass.

if you have set up the presentation to be Passed/Incomplete and this is happening, I would contact your LMS to see why they are interpreting what is being sent to them this way.
