problems with importing questions in Quizmaker

Dec 13, 2012

Hello!

I hope someone can help me before I tear out all my hair!

We're building a very large quiz for a client in which they want a question bank of over 200. I'm importing the questions from eight separate quizzes. However, when I import the questions, Quizmaker disrupts the formatting. The main issues are: changing layering of objects (pictures, shapes, etc); not preserving text sizes from the original quizzes.

I thought the problem might be file sizes, so I've been compressing pictures and have reduced some file sizes by half. Yet I've just brought in the first set of questions and - lo and behold, the layering problem has already reared its head.

Anyone got an answer before I hurl my laptop out of the window?

P.S. We have Storyline, but at the moment I would like to try to resolve the issue in Quizmaker.

Thanks

Anne

Hi Phil

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, it had occurred to me that it might be a master slide problem, so I have tried this option. The trouble is, even after editing each slide, I get more issues on publishing (oh yes, forgot to mention that Quizmaker has been freezing and crashing on publish, too... hope that the file size reduction might help there).

Ah well, if a Super Hero can't think of a magic solution, it's down to belt and braces, I guess.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Anne,

Just wanted to check in with you on this. Are the quizzes you're working with on your hard drive? The reason I ask is because you mentioned that Quizmaker is freezing and crashing when you publish. This can occur if you're trying to insert content from a network drive, USB drive or other external source. If you haven't already, try moving the content to your hard drive and see if that makes a difference.

If this continues, we'd be happy to take a closer look a the files.

Thanks!

Hi Christine

Yes, some of the images I was using came from a USB drive - not the quizzes themselves. I'll move the images and have another try.

I managed to publish successfully with a much reduced file size, but when I reopened the file to make some changes, a whole bunch of images had disappeared. It could be that the USB factor was an issue there.

Many thanks for your response. I hope I won't have to upload the files, but thanks for the offer.

Hi

Fewer problems this time, and I managed to publish successfully. However, one question continued to behave oddly (it was a drop-down matching question, and one of the answer options kept showing up as blank, although it was there - you could still select it and complete the question). So I replaced this question with a sequence drag-and-drop and republished. This seemed to work, but then I couldn't save the quiz before shutting down - the message was 'unhandled exception' and a reference to memory. I had to force a shutdown, reverting to a version saved 15 minutes earlier.

I'll upload the files anyway, to see if anyone can see a problem.

I should point out that this quiz will eventually be randomised to 50 questions from the bank of 223. However, we need to upload the full version to the client's LMS so that they can check that they're happy with the way all questions look and behave in a live setting.

Thanks for all your help - and I'd welcome any feedback.

Anne
