Quizmaker '13 - Questions already answered

Mar 28, 2014

A client of ours is using Presenter 13 to create courses for hosting on our LMS. We are running into issues with the quizzes that are embedded at the end of each lesson and the Post-Test.

Some users are finding that upon the first time reaching a quiz, answers are already selected with the Incorrect/Correct bar at the bottom.  The Submit button is there as well.  When the user clicks Submit, they get the message that they must answer the question before moving on.  They get stuck in this loop.

Same issue with the Post-Test except that no answers are selected.

The quizzes are designed to Submit one at a time with feedback after each one, no results slide at the end.  There are an average of 5 questions for each lesson quiz. The Post-Test is designed to Submit all at once with the results.  If the user fails, they are directed to the beginning of the course, if pass, they proceed to the conclusion.

I tried changing the quizmaker settings to NEVER RESUME, but the Always Resume setting at the course level seems to override this.  We have to have the course Always Resume.

Has anyone else had this same issue?  Are there an resolutions or work-arounds?  I've attached an image showing the issue.

Yes, I did.  We have to have the course set to ALWAYS RESUME as opposed to the prompt or Never Resume.  There are a few lesson quizzes and then a post-test at the end of the course - all are embedded within the presenter course.  The quizzes do not have results slides, just the feedback.  The post-test has the results slide.

I thought a quick fix would be to have the quizzes reset to initial state as in Storyline, but I don't see this as an option.

I am having a similar incident.  My quizzes have the previous answers display when attempting the quiz on the second try.  I'm assuming because the course is set to Prompt to Resume, which I need that option.  How do I get quizmaker to Never Resume?  I have that option selected in the Quizmaker Player, but obviously it's being overridden.

Ok, so now I have another issue regarding the quiz not resetting to initial state.  If my user exits the course instead of selecting the retry quiz button the previous quiz answers will still appear on the Final Review.  Is there a workaround for this?  Right now I have it set that if the user fails then they are returned to the main menu.  Should I set it to close the window if they fail?  Will that help reset the quiz?

I'm working through a similar issue here at the moment, with multiple choice, true/false and multiple answer questions having the answers pre-populated on second and subsequent tests. We have a Presenter presentation with 8 embedded quizzes. There is some duplication in the question content but each quiz is a newly made and separate file.

We're trying the Never Resume option at the moment but from what I've understood here this will only reset the presentation, and remove any pre-populated answers, when users close the session and start a new one. We need it to forget any answers given on completion of every test. Fingers crossed!

[Addendum: It looks like the results pre-populate until the user selects 'Retry quiz'. If they select finish then later in their session go back to the same quiz the quiz is pre-generated.]

Not entirely... We don't want any of the quizzes to be remembered, period. We want a student to complete a quiz and then have Articulate forget everything so they get a new randomised test every time. This only happens if they select 'Retry quiz'.

For example, if they complete a test on Chapter 1, then hit 'Finish' (and not 'Retry quiz') they go back to the menu. If they then take a Chapter 2 test and afterwards come back to Chapter 1 they will see the test they took before, with the same questions and all the answers pre-populated.

The is a critical issue because it either forces a user to skip through old tests to reset the quiz, or close the presentation every time they want to start a different quiz. This used to work on Studio '09, hopefully it still does in '13 and I'm just missing something?

The retry option is set up correctly and works fine. It's the fact that when you finish a presentation Articulate doesn't clear whatever data it has cached.

Our users will take a test, click finish and then expect the next test they take to be a new one. Can you see the disconnect I'm experiencing here? If they want to study just one topic it's fine, they can retry the quiz and the data is cleared. However, if they switch between quizzes they have to leave a trail of completed tests behind them which they then have to skip through just to 'Retry' the quiz.

This was the norm in Studio '09, wasn't it? It seems a pretty key element of functionality to remove. I'll submit a feature request but in the short term I have a pretty big problem.

Hi Julie,

I have the same problem you're having with users getting stuck at the quizzes.  In addition to receiving the Incorrect/Correct banner on the questions that haven't even been answered, they're unable to select answer choices and sometimes they receive a message that says they must first pass the quiz before being allowed to continue before they even begin taking the quiz.

I believe this is an Articulate issue, not an LMS issue.  I know several other users have experienced this same issue, so we're not the only ones.  I think Articulate has done a poor job in dealing with this and wish I'd never upgraded to Studio '13.  This problem never occurred with Studio '09.

Did you ever find a solution or a workaround to this issue?  It's driving us crazy.  Our users are getting stuck 24 hours a day in our courses because of this one issue.  We have one person that spends most of their day just addressing this one issue for our students.

I hope to hear back from you!

Thanks,

Steven

Hi Steven!

In previous versions of Articulate Presenter, the resume behavior was partly controlled by the Presenter player and partly controlled by embedded quizzes and interactions. But with the new unified player in Articulate Studio '13, the Presenter player controls resume behavior for the entire course, including embedded content. See this article for details.
